FirstLight Executive Jeff Goebel Wants to Keep Franchisee and Caregiver Momentum Going

Jeff Goebel didn’t think he’d get back into the senior home care industry.

Today, Goebel is the Vice President of Business Development and Team Support for FirstLight Home Care, a franchise company that provides in-home caregiving services. He joined the company in 2013.

Goebel owned several small businesses throughout his career before he started at FirstLight, one of which was a home care agency franchise he ran with his wife. Through this particular role, he met and got to know FirstLight CEO and co-founder Jeff Bevis, who at the time was working for the franchisor company where Goebel was a franchisee.

After about five years of being in that business, Goebel said that he and other franchisees were presented with a unique opportunity to exit the system in a positive way through a sale.

“We were fortunate and did well as franchisees in the senior care industry, and we attributed that to the philosophy of putting caregivers first,” Goebel said.

Goebel didn’t think he’d re-enter the senior care industry after that, but Bevis reached out to him and essentially offered him a role at FirstLight that would involve supporting franchisees.

“I have a lot of respect for his knowledge of the industry and knew he was going to build a quality company providing quality service,” Goebel said of Bevis. “What drew me to FirstLight was really the opportunity to be part of this great franchise system and being a premier provider in this industry.”

In his role today, Goebel manages and supports FirstLight’s entire team of Business Development Directors. Goebel is thrilled he made the move to join FirstLight. He is constantly impressed by the FirstLight team and loves having the ability to touch many lives.

“One of the things I love about my role with FirstLight is helping people succeed,” he said. “I feel I have been very fortunate in my career and have good experience to bring to the table. I hope I can help others learn from my successes and help develop a team of people.”

He also works with new franchisees coming into the system, and one of the major things FirstLight screens prospective franchisees for is whether they have a desire to help people.

“It’s one of the things we ask before we award a franchise territory,” Goebel said. “A big part of our culture is we start with the ‘Why?’ All of our franchisees have someone in their lives who has been touched by our type of service and how it would have made a difference for someone they loved. Franchisees need to understand and have a passion for what we’re doing. If I can help them do that better, then that really feels good.”

FirstLight’s culture of care makes a huge impression on prospective franchisees.

“One of the things that’s interesting to me is that obviously people go to Discovery Days and explore other options, and they feel that FirstLight’s message is consistent, that we’re running on all cylinders,” First Light Director of Human Resources Daryl Beckles said. “Our message is really consistent across the board, and the level of support we provide, plus our responsiveness, never fails to impress prospective franchisees. If we say we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it.”

FirstLight plans to keep their momentum going. Goebel proudly points to FirstLight’s high score on Franchise Business Review, for which franchisees rate the FirstLight Home Care opportunity every year.

“That’s our report card,” Goebel said.

The company is also proud of its 4.4-star rating on Glassdoor. That said, FirstLight executives recently had a two-day meeting that focused on the company’s goals for 2019. There were two major items on the agenda: further improving caregiver retention rates and caregiver training opportunities, both of which are already in a great place and increasing franchisee satisfaction.

“One of the great things about Jeff Bevis as a leader is that good isn’t great,” Goebel said. “It’s almost unprecedented to have a four-star rating, but part of the focus of our meeting was ‘How do we get to five?’”
