Ron Bender, the Chief Growth Officer of Threshold Brands, sees a promising future full of growth for Mold Medics, the company's recent acquisition. He expects the emerging brand to add half a dozen new Mold Medics franchise locations this year and 10 more in 2024.

“Our expectation is to start actively offering franchises in mid to late June just about everywhere in the continental United States, without blowing up the world,” Bender said. “But, with that said, we do see lots of potential for this.”

Mold Medics, which has one corporate location in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, offers a range of indoor air quality services including mold remediation, allergen and air duct cleaning, radon mitigation and testing solutions, and home and office disinfection. Bender noted that although national players exist in the mold and allergen space, they're “really not focused on the same angle as Mold Medics with its customer service, customer experience and consumer health.”

The acquisition brings Threshold’s portfolio to 10 brands encompassing more than 500 units. Bender added that the services offered by Mold Medics are something that Threshold’s franchise owners had been asking about. “They wanted at least to be able to refer someone that they could trust to help their existing clients,” he said.

Tim Swackhammer, Mold Medics’ founder and former CEO who took the role of brand manager after the acquisition, said his single location reported $1.45 million in revenue in 2022, a nearly 200% increase from the $488,000 in revenue it did in its first year in 2018. Swackhammer said he came up with the concept for Mold Medics after becoming aware of allergen health issues and the lack of customer care specialists working in that space.

“The mold removal industry is fairly fragmented, and most of the focus in the industry is on the insurance restoration side of the business. I saw this from the customer perspective at both an apartment I rented in college and the first home I had,” he said. “The only companies I was able to find were either large restoration companies that weren't interested in work that didn't involve a large insurance claim, or basement waterproofers that wanted to charge huge sums for services that I didn't need.”

Swackhammer originally planned to franchise and grow Mold Medics on his own. However, he and his team of 12 employees realized that the positive aspects of partnering with an established franchisor like Threshold Brands was too good of an opportunity to pass up.
