After years as a dedicated public school teacher, Zazzali found herself at a crossroads when her growing family needed quality child care options. Frustrated by her experiences touring local centers, she sought a different path and, with encouragement from her family, explored franchising opportunities. She chose The Learning Experience after meeting with the corporate team in New Jersey, where she connected with their mission and found alignment with her passion for literacy and education. Since then, Zazzali has successfully built nine TLE locations.&nbsp;1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?LynnAnn Zazzali:&nbsp;Before I got into franchising with The Learning Experience, I was a public school teacher. I started my teaching career at Clifton High School, where I taught high school English. I earned my first master's in reading and became a reading specialist in Englewood, [New Jersey], working at a middle school. While pursuing my second master's in Educational Leadership, I worked in an elementary school as a reading specialist.During my time in Englewood, I got pregnant with my first son. Then, while working at the elementary school in Pequannock, New Jersey, I got pregnant with my daughter. I noticed that my son needed to be around other children for socialization. I had someone who came to help while I was at work as a teacher, but as we started looking at child care centers, I found it very difficult. Every time I went on a tour, I would end up in tears, literally crying, thinking, “How am I going to leave my children with strangers I don't know?”I talked to my parents and my husband, and my dad suggested, “Why don’t you open up your own child care center? You’re getting your master's in Educational Leadership to be a principal, but instead of going that route, why not do this?” At first, I thought he was insane — I loved teaching so much. I won Teacher of the Year in Pequannock and it meant so much to me. I looked forward to going to work every day. But the idea stuck in my mind, and I started thinking about it more seriously.Initially, I thought I could open my own center without franchising, but I realized that the real estate piece would probably be the hardest part because of all the requirements. So, I started looking into different franchises and came across The Learning Experience. Their headquarters were in New Jersey, so it was easy for me to visit and meet with them in person. There was also a location in my town and, at the time, The Learning Experience was relatively new — this was back in 2006. I loved the people there and the fact that they had a reading component, which was especially important to me given my background.After meeting with them, I thought, “Maybe I can do this.” I signed the papers in 2006, but it wasn’t until 2008 that a location became available in Waldwick, New Jersey. I was initially apprehensive because this facility was larger than usual — 15,000 square feet instead of the typical 10,000. And the other challenge was that it was ready to open in just 30 days, while I still had a 60-day contract in my teaching job. So for a month, I was working both jobs with a lot of sleepless nights, which was challenging because I had never owned a business before.It was a big change going from being a public school teacher to being a business owner. I was used to being with children and interacting with parents, but suddenly, I had my own business to run. I quickly realized that I would also have to handle sales and marketing. Luckily, The Learning Experience has an amazing system and I learned that if I followed their system, I could make it work. And that’s what franchising is all about — having a tried-and-true system to follow.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Zazzali:&nbsp;In the beginning, I had a different perception of franchising. I used to think it might be very cold and cookie-cutter, like a one-size-fits-all approach. But that perception has changed drastically over time. I only have experience with The Learning Experience, so I’m a bit biased, but they’re very progressive and things are constantly evolving. It’s not cookie-cutter or cold at all; it’s warm and friendly.When I started, the company was much smaller, but now there are hundreds of centers across the country and even in the UK. Despite that growth, it still feels like a small company because the CEO is genuinely invested in his franchisees and treats it like a partnership — almost like a family. He’s accessible, whether it’s through a phone call, an email, a Zoom or a Teams meeting.While there are systems in place, I still have the freedom to put as much love and care into my business as I want. I can share my vision with my teams and the individual schools I own and operate, which is really important to me.1851: What made you pick this brand? Stumpf, who earned an education degree before starting her family, came to&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/pigtails-and-crewcuts/info">Pigtails &amp; Crewcuts</a> after spending time as a stay-at-home mom. As she has grown her business, she’s blended her own passion for learning and reading with her care for her community and the families in it.“I’ve always been an advocate for education; I think that ignorance is not bliss,” she said. “It benefits everyone to be educated. I like Pigtails &amp; Crewcuts because it’s a part of the community with the mom-and-pop type feeling, and one of my goals was to give back. That’s always been near and dear to my heart. With these two things in mind, the Little Free Library was the perfect idea. I’m in a great little shopping center, and people from neighboring establishments come check out the book selection, too.”When Stumpf started the Little Free Library, she built it with her kids’ own used books. Over time, though, those have been “checked out,” and the community has kept the Little Free Library alive.“I didn’t do this because it draws people back to the salon,” she said. “I did it because it makes the community more kid-friendly and more family-oriented. It’s being utilized.”<h2>A Lifelong Advocate for Education</h2>Stumpf’s passion for reading goes back to her own childhood. With a Colombian mother and Hungarian father, she grew up in a multilingual household."I speak three languages, and it was English that helped me move forward," she said. "When I was younger, my parents didn't help me separate all three languages. When you speak the other two, you don’t use pronouns. You just conjugate the verb. School for me was beneficial because English explained the pronouns, and reading was a big component to figure it all out."As a child, reading felt like a chore for Stumpf because she was navigating the language learning aspect in addition to trying to understand the story itself, but over time, she came to love “reading to read.” Encouraging her own children to read for pleasure showed Stumpf a new side of things.“My kids love books so much,” she said. “Reading is one of their ‘fun things’ to do. We go to the bookstore, and I can’t say no to books!”This informed her current understanding of how kids approach reading, and it was a key driver for her not only to establish the Little Free Library but also to incorporate the Yoto Player, a screen-free audio player, into the salon experience.&nbsp;“A lot of parents don’t want their kids to have phones, iPads or TVs now,” she said. “With the Yoto Player, a kid can hear a story and use their imagination to visualize what’s happening. It’s also a helpful tool for the kids who have a sensory need. With the Yoto Player, they’re able to sit there and focus on the story. Maybe it’s the vibration of the box or the voice of a specific reader, but they love these stories.”“I think the books and Yoto Player are a natural fit for kids — especially all the different kinds of kids,” she continued. “We have the hardcover books with sensory elements, and the Yoto Player as an auditory option for kids who have different sensory needs. Some kids like visuals, some use their imaginations and some like to be read to. It’s about mixing it up so we can serve everyone.”<h2>The Little Free Library as a Shared Community Investment</h2>Stumpf spurred the literacy push in her salon and community, but its continued success has been driven by the passion and contributions of the entire community.To stock the Little Free Library initially, she drew on her own family’s collection of children’s books, but the response from her team and community was immediate.“Even our stylists were getting excited about the books,” she said. “There are beautifully illustrated books that the kids get really excited about. We had clients who got so engaged with the Little Free Library that they were just glowing and so happy about these books. It’s awesome.”Over time, co-tenants at the shopping center have gotten involved in the effort, too. For example, there is a Bricks &amp; Minifigs location in the same center, and they have contributed Lego books to the Little Free Library.“That helps because our neighbors are encouraging reading, too,” she said. A couple of people locally have pitched in, and it’s been so worth it.”<h2>Purpose Beyond Profit</h2>The Little Free Library and Yoto Player may have brought more attention to Pigtails &amp; Crewcuts of Happy Valley, but Stumpf said that was never the point. For her, giving back is simply part of how she wants the salon to show up in the community.“We like giving back. It benefits us, but to me, it’s not a monetary benefit,” she said. “In the long term, it’ll be great for the kids. Each event will include activities and refreshments, with the goal of providing a bit of respite for the entire family and bringing a sense of normalcy to children whose lives have been upended by a major illness.“We’re a home away from home for families when they need it the most,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/cori-weatherford/">Cori Weatherford</a>, Family Services Manager at Ronald McDonald House. “These families, a lot of times, don’t take a minute to take care of themselves or the siblings of the patients. Over the years, Pigtails &amp; Crewcuts has sent over 500 hair donations to Wigs For Kids alone, contributing to wigs for children experiencing hair loss."For many years, our salons have served as donation places for Wigs For Kids. If anyone comes in for a haircut and wants to donate their hair, they can do so as long as they meet the length stipulations,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/hannah-swanson-ab4a3a143/">Hannah Swanson</a>, Franchise Development Coordinator at Pigtails &amp; Crewcuts. “Historically, the Buckhead salon used to compile those hair donations and physically put them on my desk to send out. Now, each individual location manages that directly. It’s been a wonderful national partnership for many years, but this new initiative takes it a monumental step further."After years of handling donation cuts, Charmaine Hayes, Salon Manager for Pigtails &amp; Crewcuts of Buckhead, looked deeper into Wigs For Kids and the wig fitting and application process. Now, she is a Certified Service Provider, along with two salon stylists, Kat and Jose. They have become specially trained on how to measure a child’s head and crown for a properly fitting wig.&nbsp;“Charmaine has been a stylist for decades and the manager at Buckhead for about ten years,” Swanson said. “She’s been a staple of our brand for a very long time, and this advanced certification just beautifully adds to the elite level of care and service she has already been providing to children for years.”Once children are approved through the Wigs For Kids application, they can have their measurements taken by Hayes in a warm, familiar environment and sent to Wigs For Kids to begin the hairpiece production process. And when their custom wig arrives, they can return to Pigtails &amp; Crewcuts to have it cut and styled to their exact liking.“When a child loses their hair to cancer, alopecia or for any other medical reason, they often lose a piece of their identity,” Hayes said. “Providing a wig helps to restore not only their appearance, but their confidence, hope and smile, and I’m honored to be a part of that.”“We don’t know for sure how many of our families will utilize the Wigs For Kids service, but we feel it will be a valuable resource for the families we serve who have oncology kids,” Weatherford said. “Going through something like that can drastically change your body and appearance. As a child, you have all of these questions, and other people may also be asking you questions that you don’t know how to answer. Nothing in your life feels normal anymore.
