For Seniors Helping Seniors®, it comes down to The Power of Love® and providing compassionate care that makes seniors feel seen, heard and independent while providing purpose for its senior caregivers and allowing them...a way to give and to receive®.

The in-home care services franchise helps seniors maintain their independence while brightening their lives by pairing them with fellow seniors who are carefully matched to their specific needs, personality and preferences. In this way, not only do Seniors Helping Seniors® clients have the opportunity to age in place with dignity, but they receive compassionate and empathetic care—a relationship that certainly underscores The Power of Love®.

The family-owned brand was founded as a non-profit in 1998 in Reading, Pennsylvania by husband-and-wife team Philip Yocom and Kiran Yocom. The Yocoms started Seniors Helping Seniors® based on the idea that seniors who help each other can age happily and gracefully—and that seniors who give, and those who receive, both benefit. The Yocoms wanted to serve seniors in other parts of the country that had the same needs, so they decided to leverage Philip’s franchising experience and opened the business for franchise opportunities in 2006.

Seniors Helping Seniors® is also a continuation of Kiran’s work with Mother Teresa who she worked closely with as an adolescent and throughout her young adulthood in India. After Kiran moved to the U.S. and married Philip, the Yocoms were so inspired by Mother Teresa’s servant leadership that the pair decided to establish an organization that promoted exceptional care and understanding for an often-ignored segment of the population—seniors.

“Seniors need to be cared for,” Yocom said. “That’s why we wanted to start a business that not only served but celebrated seniors.”

Seniors Helping Seniors® provides a variety of services to support seniors so that they are able to maintain their independence and enjoy life, not just in their homes, but also in their neighborhoods. These services include companionship, light housekeeping, cooking and shopping support, assistance with personal care, dementia care, pet care, light handyman services and small repairs, yard work and medication reminders.

Families who utilize Seniors Helping Seniors® for their elderly relatives can also take advantage of services such as dementia care, long-distance check-ins, respite care, overnight stays and 24-hour care. Such services give peace of mind for families, without having to disrupt their careers and lifestyle, who would otherwise need to put their loved ones in a facility.

What truly sets the brand apart from the competition is its practice of focusing on hiring seniors to act as caregivers and provide empathetic care, said Vice President of Operations Daniel Jan. By hiring seniors to help seniors, the brand is also creating meaningful employment opportunities for a demographic that is frequently at risk of being underutilized.

More than merely being a point of differentiation, however, Seniors Helping Seniors® approach to caregiving is about underscoring the value of love. Seniors Helping Seniors® “uses love in the way we communicate,” Philip said. This includes using trademarked sayings such as “The power of love®,” “Love is in our care™,” and “Bringing love into the lives of seniors with dignity and respect®.” Such sayings make the brand’s values clear to customers and prospective caregivers.

“It’s about the relationship that we create by matching people that have similar interests, hobbies, life experiences, languages and cultures and who enjoy spending time with each other, rather than just pairing them up at random,” Jan said. “This allows them to develop deeper and longer lasting relationships and friendships.”

To that end, Seniors Helping Seniors® caregivers undergo a thorough screening process before they begin. By doing so, they are able to ensure they are the perfect match and the right person for the role.

“We want to provide seniors with the help they want and need at a price they can afford, and we want to provide our seniors with the ability to live an independent lifestyle in their own homes for as long as possible,” Yocom said.

While Seniors Helping Seniors® has come a long way since it was founded, the brand continues to grow in its mission to provide empathetic and loving care by continuing to add new services to better assist seniors and refine caregiver training as new industry best practices come to light. With empathy and love at the center of everything the brand does, Seniors Helping Seniors® is well-positioned as a service that will continue to grow and expand and help seniors enjoy their golden years.
