Why Sylvan Learning Franchisees Choose Their Center Location

Whether it is a resale or brand new location, the Sylvan Learning team provides all of the necessary tools to ensure that franchisees succeed.

For the last 40 years, premier supplemental and enrichment education franchise Sylvan Learning has been paving the way for student success thanks to technology-driven classroom innovation, proven ACT/SAT test prep curricula, in-demand STEM courses and more.

With more than 750 points of presence around the world, Sylvan Learning centers are deeply ingrained in the communities they serve. As demand for the most reputable name in supplementary education continues to soar, Sylvan Learning helps incoming franchisees choose the perfect center location, whether new or resale.

Terry Wettig, a franchisee who opened his Sylvan Learning center in Prattville, Alabama in March 2019, said the support he and his wife and business partner, Carol, received from the moment they began interacting with the brand has been authentic and comprehensive.

“My daughter attended Sylvan Learning many years ago, and I knew the reputation and brand recognition the name carried,” said Wettig. “When I decided to franchise in the supplemental education space, to me, there was no other option — it had to be Sylvan.”

When the Wettigs were presented with the choice of where to open their Sylvan Learning location, they decided on available markets in Alabama to be closer to family, even though it required opening a brand new center. “Going this route, we knew there would be unique challenges versus buying an existing center,” he said. “We opted to tackle those challenges head-on as we knew the location and proximity to family would be worth the extra effort. The Sylvan Learning team provided exceptional support every step of the way.”

Each franchisee receives multi-layered support through a variety of departments including training, education, operations and the contact center. This distinctive approach allows for a cohesive environment across the entire Sylvan system. In addition, franchisees are given individual attention from Sylvan’s marketing representatives and supply owners with in-depth tools to run local campaigns on their own.

Thanks to Sylvan Learning’s proven business model and marketing support, the Wettigs’ center has seen great success and has even adopted a hometown feel for students and families. Since Terry and his wife Carol had previously lived in Prattville for many years, they were able to lean on valuable community connections and develop an in-depth understanding of local challenges.

Instead of opening a new location, another Sylvan Learning franchisee, Alfred Yau, chose to take over an existing center in Burlington, Ontario. “I chose this location because the neighborhood had a high concentration of family homes.” he said. “When I decided to take over the center, I had access to a great amount of consumer data, which showed that there was an opportunity to grow as a business and inspire more learning in the Burlington community.”

Yau was able to keep the same staff at the center and take advantage of established brand recognition in the area. Since opening last year, Yau has utilized Sylvan’s local marketing strategies to increase this recognition by engaging with the local community through charity organizations and partnerships with local businesses.

The multi-unit Sylvan Learning franchisee William Silva operates six centers throughout Orlando, Florida. “Since coming to Florida, I’ve taken over the centers of two retired franchisees and opened four new centers,” said Silva. “The centers I took over were struggling, and I was able to update the business model in order to help each one grow with Sylvan’s innovative technology, which has been an amazing experience.”

Whether it be a resale or new center location, Sylvan Learning’s industry-leading differentiators, franchisee-support infrastructure and 40 years of brand awareness offer the perfect business opportunity for franchise candidates interested in the education space.

Startup costs for a Sylvan Learning Center range from $70,270-$163,625, including a franchise fee of $24,000. For more information about franchising with Sylvan Learning, please click here.
