Mathnasium Learning Centers, the math-only education franchise that offers individualized instruction in a fun and engaging environment, has a deep-rooted appreciation for teachers, especially since many of their own franchise owners have backgrounds as former educators. The brand works closely with surrounding schools and acts as a resource for teachers, which should come as no surprise. After all, they both share the same goal of helping students succeed. For Teacher Appreciation Week, the brand is pulling out all the stops to show its support and gratitude for educators.

1851 Franchise spoke with two teachers-turned-franchisees, sisters Emily Gyurke and Melissa David, about their transition from the classroom to business ownership and how they continue to support teachers in their community.

Transitioning From Teaching to Franchising

Both Gyurke and David were elementary school teachers for several years before deciding to search for a new opportunity. The pair was keen to continue their mission of helping and educating young people, but wanted to explore options outside of the classroom. At first, they considered starting their own tutoring program, but when David stumbled upon Mathnasium when searching the web, the sisters changed course.

David opened her Mathnasium location in Largo, Florida, in December of 2016, and upon her recommendation, Gyurke opened her own location in Palm Harbor, Florida, just over a year later.

"I love being my own boss and having the flexibility to now be a bigger part of my own kids' lives," David said. "And I still have a career that I feel makes a difference.”

Gyurke agreed that franchising with Mathnasium has allowed her to hold on to many of the rewarding aspects of teaching. However, it is also allowing her to cater to the diverse learning needs of students — something many teachers often feel is overwhelming in a classroom of 20 or more students.

“I think it's really hard as a teacher to meet the needs of all the kids when you have so many things put on your plate,” Gyurke said. “Having a background in education has given me a great understanding of the curriculum and the steps involved, but also of students and their needs. With Mathnasium, the curriculum is specific to the students’ needs. We can help students get caught up without feeling stress and anxiety from everything else going on."

Teacher Appreciation Week Celebrations, Incentives and Giveaways

Drawing from their teaching experiences, Gyurke and David understand the pivotal role teachers play in shaping a child's educational journey. As Mathnasium franchisees, they're on a mission not only to nurture students but also to support their fellow educators.

For Teacher Appreciation Week, their Mathnasium centers — along with many others across the nation — are showing their gratitude. From heartfelt thank-you notes delivered to local schools to thoughtful gestures like apple-shaped stress balls and appreciation meals, Mathnasium is going out of its way to lift teachers up and give them the recognition they deserve.

“We put together some really big teacher appreciation baskets, filled with tons of easy snacks for them to grab from the staff room. We deliver them to the elementary schools in our inner territory,” Gyurke said. “We also put together a breakfast last week for our teachers with bagels. I always appreciated things like that when I was teaching.”

Mathnasium also offers exclusive incentives to teachers as tokens of appreciation. The brand is offering teachers a 50% discount for their own children's enrollment and an offer of $100 off enrollment for their students. The brand will continue the celebrations with a giveaway during Teacher Appreciation Week, including $100 Educational Insights gift cards that teachers can use to purchase educational toys.

"We know teachers need all the support and good stuff as we can give; they deserve it for sure," David said.

In the spirit of giving back, Mathnasium also extends its support to schools, providing essential resources and fostering collaborative relationships with teachers.

"We are always in communication with our students' teachers," David said. "We want teachers to know we support them, recognize them and, ideally, we want to make their lives easier."

In the eyes of Mathnasium franchisees, teachers are their hardworking partners who are helping students continue to grow in confidence and academic ability. And for teachers who are seeking opportunities outside of the classroom, Mathnasium is offering 25% off its franchise fee for former educators.

“I have so much respect for our teachers and people who choose to make a difference in the lives of children,” David said. “I want teachers to know that we support them. We recognize them. If we can team together to support their students, everybody is better off.”
