With 1,100 locations worldwide, Mathnasium, the math education franchise, has carved out a strong niche for itself in the larger supplemental education franchise space. Not only is the concept more focused on its specific subject but it also approaches education in a way that is unique compared to the larger industry standard. This has allowed the brand to build a strong reputation as a concept that both students and their parents love, establishing a loyal customer base while supporting franchisees internally with marketing help, curriculum development and consistent evolution.

“The first time I was in a center and saw the students engaged, having fun learning math and building that confidence, it rekindled my own passion towards education,” explained Kevin Shen, chief development officer. “I did supplementary education growing up, and it wasn’t a fun experience for me. Seeing everything working together and seeing the magic that happens in the center was awesome. I thought, ‘How do we get this in more people’s hands? How do we get it to more kids across the U.S.?’”

As Mathnasium works to grow to 1,500 locations in the next five years, it is leveraging its focus on operational excellence to continue to streamline processes and strengthen the network as it expands.

Mathnasium Works to Make Franchisees’ Lives Easier

The Mathnasium leadership team sees the value of and is hungry for continued innovation. In an effort to streamline local owners’ operations, the franchisor is working to launch centralized systems of marketing, business intelligence tools and other processes that allow franchisees to shift their focus away from administrative tasks and put more energy towards day-to-day lead generation and relationship building.

“We can genuinely say that we are working to make franchisees’ lives easier, which I don’t think is the case for many franchisors,” added Shen.

With centralized digital marketing, other marketing support and a franchise business coach model to help new franchisees onboard and become profitable, Mathnasium offers a robust support structure that is highly inclusive of the range of challenges a franchisee might experience. In turn, the primary responsibilities of franchisees are to monitor daily operations, manage local marketing and develop community relations. As the system continues to grow and Mathnasium develops additional support resources, daily operations will only be simplified further.

The Brand Offers a Strong ROI Potential

The rate of return for a Mathnasium franchise allows franchisees who ramp up in a typical fashion to recoup their initial investment in about one year and continue to increase their rate of return by 20–30% over a five-year period.

Ongoing costs are also managed by focusing on a single subject, which simplifies staffing and supports higher profits.

“Some competitors who offer more products like English and language arts will have a higher average unit volume but also have a downward trajectory in terms of unit count, profit and revenue,” said Shen. “That’s a function of having to staff for offerings that are very different. Staffing and costs are simplified with Mathnasium.”

The franchise has seen steady double-digit average unit volume growth since its launch; last year, it saw a 13% climb in year-over-year AUVs.

How Mathnasium Is Growing

With its sights set on 1,500 units by 2028, Mathnasium is considering expansion across the U.S. and in select international markets, including India and the Philippines. With 59 agreements signed year-to-date, Mathnasium has already exceeded its growth goals for the year with plenty of runway left. Interest in the concept is palpable, and investors should get in quickly before territory availability becomes sparse.

While Mathnasium, as a math education franchise, appeals to many former educators, Shen said the system is open to investors with a range of backgrounds. To support diverse ownership, veterans and former educators are eligible to receive a 25% discount on the initial franchise fee, and area developers have access to additional financing support for the initial franchise fees associated with each unit in the development series.

“We’re very passionate about furthering education, but our model offers so much more,” said Shen. “For investors, this is a great way to get a better work-life balance while doing something meaningful. We’re open to talking to really anyone who wants to start their own business and is passionate about connecting with their community and helping students gain confidence through education.”

The initial investment required to begin the operation of a Mathnasium franchise is $112,860-$149,155. To find out more information on costs to buy this franchise, please visit 1851franchise.com/mathnasium/info
