For Lynette and Carter Groves, Mathnasium Learning Centers is more than just a business — it’s a way to blend their individual passions into a thriving enterprise that makes a real difference in students’ lives. Based in Arizona, the husband-and-wife duo has steadily expanded their footprint with Mathnasium, growing from a single location in 2010 to ten centers today. Here is their story.
A Journey Rooted in Education and Business
Lynette’s background as a secondary math teacher and a graduate of Arizona State University laid the foundation for the couple’s entry into the Mathnasium franchise system. She took a break from teaching after their daughter was born but was drawn back into the classroom when her child’s school principal encouraged her to return. It wasn’t long before she earned Teacher of the Year honors.
Meanwhile, Carter was building his career in retail, working his way up to store manager roles at Target and Kohl’s. However, as he puts it, “Retail is tough.” After being laid off during the recession, the couple began looking for new opportunities. That’s when they discovered Mathnasium.
Taking the Leap Into Franchising
Lynette immediately connected with Mathnasium’s approach to teaching math, which she found far superior to other methods she had encountered.
“Just memorizing something without having context makes it hard to use in real life,” she said. “I loved the way Mathnasium did it. Everything is done in the center, reducing the frustration of the students. They have help right when they need it.”
Seeing Lynette’s enthusiasm, Carter took the leap and purchased their first Mathnasium center in 2010. Lynette ran it on her own at initially, but soon enough, they began expanding.
“People started approaching us,” Carter said. “We bought a Scottsdale location, then our third one in 2013. Eventually, we were doing well enough that I could leave retail to focus on the business completely.”
Scaling Up the Right Way
By 2016, the Groves had added two more locations. In 2019, they grew by three more centers, and despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, they opened two additional centers in 2021, bringing their total to ten. Throughout this rapid expansion, they have refined a strategy for scalable growth.
“Mathnasium makes it even easier to expand now,” Carter said. “They have a lot of the processes and systems in place. It is really scalable in stages. Lynette could do three centers on her own, but when you get to five, you need two people. We didn’t need a district manager until we had ten centers. So the scalability is all about how hands-on you want to be as a manager.”
Even with ten locations, the couple remains actively involved in operations. “I still do all the payroll, and Lynette is still engaged in the centers,” Carter said. “As you scale up, you can pull away a little bit and focus more on the business, but Mathnasium ensures you have the resources to do it effectively.”
A Business That Aligns With Their Passion
For Lynette, Mathnasium allows her to stay connected to what she loves most — helping students build confidence in math. “I still get to do what I love,” she said. “I like going in, working with the kids, and being a tutor. You can find out how the center is run and look at it through the eyes of the kids.”
Carter, on the other hand, enjoys the challenge of managing and scaling a business. “Besides being fun, it’s also a good management strategy,” he said. “All of our centers operate the same because Lynette is there to guide them.”
Looking Ahead to More Growth
The Groves have no plans to slow down. “We are hoping to grow even more in the future,” Carter said. “Arizona is one of the fastest-growing states, and our county is one of the fastest-growing in the state. There are lots of centers around, but we’d love to keep expanding in Arizona.”
Currently, they are in the process of relocating two centers to even better locations. “We understand the crisis that is happening in education, and Mathnasium is only going to become more and more important looking ahead,” Carter said. “Because of COVID, there is a big opportunity and a big gap in learning. The systems, processes and leadership team at Mathnasium are solid, and they make it easy for franchisees to grow.”
For the Groves, Mathnasium is a way to create lasting change in students’ lives while building a thriving enterprise. As they continue expanding, their story inspires those looking to blend passion with business success in the education sector.
