California Law Adds New Franchisee Protections

On Oct. 11, 2015, Gov. Jerry Brown of California signed into law a bill that would extend new protections to franchisees. This law is being called unprecedented by some observers. The new law amends California’s Business and Professional Code to require franchisors to provide a written explanation for terminating franchise agreements and to repurchase the franchisee’s assets upon termination. The new law also gives franchisees more time to correct infractions of franchise agreements and narrows legal reasons for termination.
 
 
McDonald’s Franchisee Confidence Rises Amid All Day Breakfast
While third quarter sales for the fast food giant continued to fall, franchisees are optimistic for the fourth quarter. Third-quarter sales dropped by 0.9 percent for 29 franchisees who own 226 stores in the U.S., with the biggest decline coming from same-store sales in the south falling 1.6 percent. Even though this will be the seventh straight quarter for decline for the Golden Arches, the new all-day breakfast has improved perception for the brand and faith in franchisees.

Cousins Subs Donates $50,000 to Charity
As part of Cousins Subs’ “Combos For A Cure” campaign, the brand was able to present the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation with a donation of $50,000. This September, the Wisconsin-based brand contributed a percentage of all combo meal sales to the VLCF to support cancer care and research throughout the state. The Cousins Subs Make It Better Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization also contributed to the cause.

Two Fan Favorites Are Returning to California Pizza Kitchen
To celebrate National Pizza Month this October, California Pizza Kitchen is bringing back two favorite pizzas: the roasted garlic chicken and shrimp scampi pizza. The roasted garlic chicken pizza features caramelized onions, grilled pulled chicken breast, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. While the shrimp scampi pizza includes garlic shrimp, garlic cream sauce, caramelized onions, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, red chili, arugula and Greek oregano. The shrimp scampi pizza will be available through Nov. 2, 2015, and the roasted garlic chicken will be a permanent menu item at participating locations.
 
 
Pet Supplies Plus Hires New Senior VP of Franchising
David Leonardo has been hired as the new senior vice president of franchising of Pet Supplies Plus. Prior to joining the Pet Supplies Plus team, Leonardo served as the COO of La Galere Markets and has worked in other high-level franchise positions for companies including Wild Wings Café, Arby’s Restaurant Group, Wendy’s and Burger King. Leonardo is planning on looking for qualified multi-unit franchisees from different categories interested in opportunities within the pet industry.
