Home service franchises provide an affordable and scalable entry into business ownership, offering lower startup costs, steady demand and strong franchisor support.

With lower startup costs, steady demand and proven business models, home service franchises provide a structured path to success, especially for first-time owners.
“Home service franchises are appealing to first-time owners for several reasons,” said Adam Biedenbender, vice president of franchise business development at CertaPro Painters. “First, many home service franchises already have established brand recognition and a proven business model with a path to success.”
According to Biedenbender, franchising offers a number of benefits over starting a business from scratch, including access to marketing materials, operations manuals, website and other technological assets.
Aaron Harper, CEO of Rolling Suds, agrees that home service franchises provide a strong foundation for new business owners. “Home service franchises are a great entry point into business ownership because they’re typically lower cost, have faster break-even points and offer essential services that people always need,” he said. “Unlike a restaurant or retail store, you don’t need a prime location or a huge upfront investment in inventory. You can start lean, focus on delivering great service and grow from there.”
Some home service franchises are particularly well-suited for first-time owners due to their simplicity and scalability.
“A great option is painting services,” Biedenbender said. “I may be a bit biased since I work for CertaPro Painters, but I believe the painting industry provides untapped growth potential. The work you do is interactive and hands-on and can open the door to building personal relationships with your community.”
By providing a service to your local community, Biedenbender notes that franchisees can create longtime, repeat customers that return to their business while promoting it through high-trust word-of-mouth promotions.
Harper emphasizes that mobile services and exterior cleaning businesses are among the easiest to launch. “The easiest ones to start are typically those with low overhead and simple operations — things like mobile services, exterior cleaning (like power washing), lawn care or junk removal,” he said. “These businesses don’t require a storefront, and you can start small while you grow.”
According to Biedenbender, first-time owners should evaluate many key factors — including market demand — before choosing a franchise. “Look into the potential local competition, the demand for the particular home services you are offering in the area and understand the business model’s growth potential,” he said. “A key question to ask — what will be your franchise fees and ongoing costs?”
In addition to demand, Harper recommends paying attention to the financials and franchise support structure. “Understand the margins,” he said. “Revenue is great, but what matters is what you keep. Some franchises might look impressive on paper, but if your overhead eats up most of your profits, you’ll struggle.”
Franchisor support plays a crucial role in the success of first-time owners. “Many leading home service brands, particularly those with national brand recognition and strong reputations, significantly invest in franchisee success,” Biedenbender said.
A good franchisor will offer solid training and support to help franchisees as they get started, as well as on an ongoing basis. “A good franchisor isn’t just selling you a business — they’re handing you a playbook for success and helping you execute it,” said Harper. “If the franchisor has strong systems for marketing, lead generation and efficient operations, you’re set up for success. If they don’t, you’re basically on your own.”
Biedenbender cautions that, despite their advantages, home service franchises come with their own set of hurdles. “Like with any business, first-time franchise owners may encounter some challenges along the way,” he said. “Usual challenges include hiring and retaining employees, managing customer expectations, and fine-tuning customer service efforts, market competition and seasonal demand.”
Harper echoes this sentiment. “The biggest challenge for new owners is usually hiring and managing a team,” he said. “A lot of people come into franchising thinking they just need to learn the technical side of the business, but the real key to success is leadership. Finding, training and keeping great employees is often the hardest part.”
He also pointed out that customer acquisition can be an obstacle. “Even with a great brand, you must get the word out in your local market,” he said. “A good franchisor will have strong marketing systems in place, but as an owner, you still have to execute and be the ‘face’ of the brand in your local community.”
Home service franchises offer a low-cost, high-demand entry into business ownership, making them an excellent choice for first-time franchisees. Whether it’s painting, power washing, junk removal or another service-based business, success often comes down to choosing a well-supported franchise with strong market demand.
