After working as a software engineer for nearly two decades, Eric Ha has experienced the corporate world as well as business ownership, both within and beyond the franchise model. After reviewing the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), the two were confident in their decision.1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us.&nbsp;What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Ha:&nbsp;I graduated with a computer science degree, so my full-time job has been in software engineering for nearly 20 years. After I got married to my wife, who I met while on a volunteer trip in Vietnam, her schooling did not carry over to the American market. She could either go through schooling all over again or we could just start a business.We didn’t have much family depending on us at that point, so we thought we would go for it. We first tried a franchise concept called Great Clips. We did that for about seven years and had three locations, then someone bigger than us acquired us. The next thing we did wasn’t exactly a franchise; it was Amazon DSP. We did that for about a year and a half, and had about 100 employees. Again, someone bigger than us acquired us. That was about a year and a half ago.&nbsp;When we started thinking about getting into another business, we wanted to try something that we could be proud of and something that the kids would be excited to bring friends to hang out in. The bakery would be something cool.We wanted that pride of ownership. All of the Paris Baguette locations I’ve ever seen have a formidable presence. It’s very eye-catching. I thought that’d be pretty cool. We had been thinking about trying food and beverage for a while, and the look and feel of the stores kind of sealed the deal.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Ha:&nbsp;Everything that I heard was positive. The one negative thing that I had heard was that the franchisor takes too much of your profits, but the brand presence and systems in place are the trade-off. That was why we started franchising in the first place. Whatever royalties or advertising funds you’re paying will totally pay themselves off with the brand recognition.It’s a great experience. Win or lose, if the business is successful or not, going through the experience alone is so valuable. Even if you go with an “out there” concept, seeing how the professionals do it, that almost gives you a cheat sheet. You understand how things should work and how things best operate, and you have that information forever.I believe that independent businesses are more likely than a franchise, of the same type, to fail. The support we get from corporate is great.1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Ha:&nbsp;In addition to the strength of the brand and having something my kids can be proud of, we felt that the food and beverage is in the Critical Services industry, which was important to us, after recently living through the shutdowns at the beginning of the Covid pandemic.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Ha:&nbsp;The long-term plan is that I want to offer myself a job. However, it's tough &amp; risky for a single store to replace a Bay Area corporate salary. I’ve always wanted to have something of my own; there’s a lot of fulfillment in having your own business.I’d like to have a few locations that are far enough apart that we can address multiple markets. Then once those grow, I can step away from software and spend more time in the cafés and with my family.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?Ha:&nbsp;My goal in life right now is to expose my kids to as much as possible. They’ve seen my engineering side and a few different business concepts already. Now they’re going to see this.My kids’ eyes are much more open. My hope is that I can take them out of their Protected Life bubble and expose them to more of the real world - like the beauty of things with camping, hiking, road trips, or how the world really works, by giving them a peek behind the scenes of businesses. I only have a few more years of being able to curate these experiences for them before they develop a mind of their own &amp; become fully independent. I hope these memories I'm planting into their heads now help grow them into the best possible versions of themselves.1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Ha:&nbsp;Something to understand is that, at least at every company I’ve started or worked within, the biggest and most difficult thing to figure out is that leading and making things happen does not necessarily come down to who can speak the loudest. It’s being able to listen to and understand other people. Connecting with people on a personal level is how you make things happen.The scary thing is that of all of these fancy business degrees you can get, not many of them teach you how to connect with people. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. You only have to look at my credit card bill to see what a big industry kids' sports is — I've got two kids obsessed with them. Now that I'm married, have kids, lead Cub Scouts, coach sports teams, and everything else, I just don't have as much time as I used to. What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. We went on to buy and build a couple of multifamily homes and lowered the rent. In trying to buy housing and build affordable housing, I was also looking to start workforce development. I thought I would train people to fix houses and give them jobs.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Campbell:&nbsp;As I started writing up that workforce development program, it was really hard. But one day I saw TruBlue, and I thought, “Wow — this is a business with a purpose.” You can merge service and community, and that’s my sweet spot. I’m a Baby Boomer myself, and I know that 65 is just getting in the game nowadays.I’ve ensured that our team learns about senior citizens. As a senior, we sometimes forget that we’re not 21 anymore. People know about the risk of falling, but they still get on ladders.I went to change a light bulb the other day on a step ladder, and when I was coming down, I almost broke my neck. I can afford to have somebody come over and do the maintenance plan. They can come by every quarter. That fall was fitting — I’d never had that happen before.We don’t age in our minds as much as we age in our bodies. It’s just not worth it. Sometimes you can have a fall and get injuries that you never recover from.1851: What does your background bring to the TruBlue model?Campbell:&nbsp;I’m a senior. I’m in real estate. I own personal real estate in five states. I understand the entrepreneur who has to get his house ready for a flip, and I understand providers. We provide a premium service. What’s going to determine how the client feels about the job is how they feel about you. That’s why I teach five-star service. It’s about relationships. If we make good relationships, we can bring in repeat customers.1851: What are your long-term goals with TruBlue?Campbell:&nbsp;I’m writing grants to build houses and getting ready to build 34 units for veterans — permanent housing for chronically homeless veterans. It’s a $10 million project. We’re also starting a all boys school, HOPE Technology Preparatory Academy, a high school for boys 9-14th years. What’s different about this school is it’s culture over curriculum and giving them the chance to belong to a brotherhood. If we don’t give them a place to belong in the school, they will find a place to belong in a gang. With TruBlue, I can have them working for us being exposed to different skills, environments, people, doing work and awakening their perspective to so much more. These young men won’t be in a traditional school with a workforce program; the school is the workforce program and a stabilizing institution in the community as it will host a head start program, daycare center, and learning labs for adults and to get their GED, high school diploma and learn new trades and skills.My goal is to expand with TruBlue into other states. I believe that when I talk to them this time next year, we’re going to outperform most franchisees. I’m an overachiever, that’s what I do. We’re starting out slow but we will excel to lead, it’s just a matter of time.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Campbell:&nbsp;We are a home service ally for people. One call does it all. Our school is creating young men of character, education and leadership for life, and the good part about it is we can employ these young men and help them reach their dreams. I have been in the supply chain industry for 26 years, starting in manufacturing and then switching to health care in 2007. Currently, I work for a supply chain industrial engineering firm, focusing on construction, specifically for new hospital builds, renovations, and expansions. Doug Watson: I’ve been a videographer for 27 years, shooting footage for television and documentaries. I’m currently working for the PBS affiliate in Harrisburg, PA.Brandon Miramontes: My entire career has been spent in logistics. For the past 6 years; I have owned and operated a company contracted with Amazon through their Delivery Service Partner (DSP) network to manage last mile deliveries in the Asheville, NC metro area. Prior to this, I spent 15 years in various roles within the railway industry in both the U.S. and Canada, including railroad operations, auditing, and continuous improvement.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Aimee:&nbsp;At this point in our careers, we were looking for a business that we could totally own and control ourselves, but that we didn’t have to build from the ground up. Doug and I recently&nbsp;decided to&nbsp;move back to East Tennessee, which is like home for us, and we really liked the prospect of being able to leverage all of our local contacts. We’ve signed on to open up to four cafés as an area developer, with the first anticipated to open by the end of this year.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Aimee: My perception of franchising before entering this world was that it is very stringent, that you don’t actually own the business, and that you’re just the operations manager. Now that we’re actually in it, it’s totally different. The franchisor provides a great opportunity to expand and run the business how we want to.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Aimee: We looked for a brand that was truly different from anything else on the market. What are your plans for growth? Aimee: One of our major goals is to be able to employ&nbsp;East Tennessee&nbsp;students and provide them with real-life on-the-job experience.
