When it comes to finding the perfect franchise, the journey can feel overwhelming. With thousands of opportunities spanning industries, investment levels and business models, knowing where to begin is key. Finding the right fit requires introspection, thorough research and asking the right questions.

Mike Revak, president of Sky Zone Franchise Group, recently sat down with 1851 Franchise to share his insights and suggestions on finding the franchise that aligns with your financial and lifestyle goals.

Start with Your Investment Level

According to Revak, the first step in choosing a franchise is determining your budget. “With the wide variety of franchise opportunities available, this helps you quickly narrow down your options and focus on opportunities that align with your financial status and goals,” he said. “Once the initial finances are taken into consideration, factors like the industry, the franchise’s size and age, and whether your skills or experience align with the business model can be considered.”

Beyond the initial investment, consider additional costs such as ongoing fees, marketing contributions and operational expenses to ensure the business aligns with your financial goals.

Ask the Right Questions

During the interview process, it’s important to ask the right questions to make sure the franchise is a good fit for you. “Start by asking about the time commitment required to run the business effectively,” said Revak. “This will give you clarity on whether the business fits the schedule and expectations you are looking for.”

This is also the perfect opportunity to assess the franchisor’s level of support. “Ask questions about specific departments such as marketing, training, real estate assistance and ongoing operational support,” Revak said. Knowing these details can provide clarity on how the franchise will help you bridge gaps in your expertise and complement your strengths.

Talk to Current Franchisees

A franchise opportunity might promise robust support, but how can you truly measure what that entails? Talking to current franchisees is one of the most effective ways to evaluate the less tangible aspects of a franchise model.

“Speaking with new franchisees can provide insights into the onboarding process and initial support, while more experienced franchisees can share their perspective on long-term operations and success,” said Revak. “These conversations will also help you assess the franchise network’s overall support, which can have a significant impact on your day-to-day experience.”

Assess the Culture Fit

While financial and operational alignment is critical, the culture of a franchise network should not be overlooked. The franchise’s values, community involvement and interpersonal dynamics can significantly impact your experience as an owner.

“Since you’ll work closely with the franchisor’s team, understanding their overall support style, responsiveness, and values is essential,” said Revak.

To get a sense of cultural alignment, spend time observing franchise operations firsthand as much as possible. Visit multiple locations and immerse yourself in the business’s day-to-day environment.

“When I’m speaking with those interested in opening a Sky Zone, I always tell them one of the most effective ways to get a feel for the business is to spend time in a park,” said Revak. “I tell them to visit multiple locations, observe operations, bring their families and engage with other guests. This hands-on approach provides invaluable insights into the daily culture and whether it aligns with your expectations.”

Another way to evaluate culture is by examining the franchise’s community initiatives. Many franchisors actively give back to local and national causes, which can reflect their broader mission and values.

“If giving back to your community is important, you can look into the charities that a franchise aligns itself with and how active they are,” said Revak.

For example, Sky Zone has partnered with organizations like Best Buddies and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, allowing franchisees to make a meaningful impact at the local level.

Finding Your Perfect Match

Selecting a franchise is a decision that requires thoughtful consideration. By focusing on your financial capacity, asking the right questions and making sure the brand’s culture aligns with your own, you’ll be better equipped to make a choice that aligns with your personal and professional goals.

Whether it’s your first venture into franchising or a strategic addition to your portfolio, taking the time to thoroughly assess opportunities ensures that you’ll find a franchise that’s the perfect match.
