Phoenix Business Journal: CHOP5 Prepares to Expand Its Fast-Casual Salad Concept Around the Valley

The emerging salad franchise has partnered with Scottsdale-based Conscious Capital Growth to grow in the Phoenix market through franchising.

CHOP5 Salad Kitchen, the emerging salad franchise, has partnered with Conscious Capital Growth, a Scottsdale-based franchise advisory company, to accelerate its growth through franchising. The company plans to open more than a dozen locations in the Phoenix area, with the hope of eventually having up to 15 locations there.

“Phoenix is an ideal market. When you start to look at the demographics of Phoenix, it's everything that we want to have,” Brian Mills, co-founder and co-owner of CHOP5, told  Phoenix Business Journal. “Phoenix is skewing to a younger demographic — the 30- to 40-year-olds — plus an active lifestyle. Everything we look at, [Phoenix has] just got the right feel of where CHOP5 customers are.”

There is no CHOP5 franchisee in the market yet, but Mills is hopeful to find an experienced individual or group to operate the concept in the Valley. CHOP5 has changed its real estate strategy post-COVID, focusing on being closer to larger residential areas rather than office districts. Due to the high cost and scarcity of leasable retail space, particularly in Phoenix, the company has shifted its target from top AA centers to B+ real estate.

“People are willing to search us out a little bit now,” Mills said. “Our footprint is much smaller [than it used to be] — around 2,000 square feet — and that may be reducing because we're seeing such a high number of third-party deliveries.”

CHOP5’s founders, who have extensive experience as franchisees of various restaurant concepts, including over 100 Papa John’s units in the Valley, bring valuable insights into what makes franchised restaurants successful. Unlike other salad concepts such as the Valley-based Salad and Go, CHOP5 stands out by chopping and preparing salads right in front of customers.

The franchise plans to open new locations in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Peoria and Arcadia.
