Consumer Confidence Rises in April Despite Continued Concerns Surrounding Pricing

The consumer confidence index increased by 0.6 points this month, but its still at one of its lowest points since the pandemic. For franchises, price and value will only become more important.

Consumer confidence has increased slightly in April, the Associated Press reports. Climbing from 92.2 in March to 92.8 this month, the index seems to demonstrate positive momentum, but it’s still close to its lowest level since the pandemic.

This slight bump seems like a good sign, but it’s paired with continued concerns around rising costs — specifically gas, which saw its largest monthly jump in six decades. Overall, consumer prices rose by more than 3% year over year in March, and they rose by 0.9% between February and March of this year.

For the franchise industry, this paints an interesting picture. Value continues to be a focus for consumers (McDonald’s is one example), meaning franchise brands will need to ensure they’re providing something people actually care to spend money on, and the product and experience must be worth the cost.

Times like these present great opportunities for quick-service restaurants, for example, to further push the value message, potentially catching the attention of consumers moving away from fast casual and full-service dining experiences to cut back on discretionary spending.

Economic data still points to caution, but franchise brands have some built-in advantages. With the support of a larger system, brands can respond more consistently than independent businesses and keep the focus on value. As consumers watch their budgets, franchises that offer dependable products and services at a fair price have a stronger chance to build loyalty and win more business.
