There once was a man named Josh York who envisioned a gym concept that could be delivered to your front door. At his parents’ dining room table, he built a concept based on this vision of a gym on wheels, carrying 365 pieces of workout equipment, delivering a great workout to the homes of those who don’t have the time or motivation to make it to the gym. Fast forward ten years, and this same vision has become a leading franchise concept spanning throughout 160 territories and two countries.

Building a successful franchise concept is an incredible feat. Building one that grows at such an incredible pace into international territory, can seem nearly impossible. Yet, York has made it seem simple.

“In developing the concept, I first thought about the future and ways the world is evolving,” said York. “People want convenience. They don’t want to turn their lights off – they want Alexa to do it. Why should their gym accessibility be any different?”

Once York finalized the concept and built it into a bulletproof franchise model, he began looking for the perfect franchisees to get behind each location. One thing they all have in common – passion for the cause.

“In order to build a great business, you have to surround yourself with good people,” said York. “I always ask myself: Would I have this person over for dinner? If the answer is no, I move on. The people that we have brought into the concept don’t see it as work. They see it as an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those that are looking for a way to better themselves both physically and mentally, and need the assistance.”

Although the franchisee system is busting at the seams with passionate entrepreneurs, each bringing the concept to a new territory, corporate still plays a large part in the rapid expansion.

“Every time I am asked why I joined the GYMGUYZ system, I say the same thing – GYMGUYZ is my family,” said KaraLee Craig, GYMGUYZ owner in Ottawa, the first international territory. “All of the platforms and vendors that we use to make our location successful were provided by the corporate team. If we have a question on something they are just a phone call away, even though they are in an entirely different country, over 500 miles away. They have been so supportive while I introduced GYMGUYZ to a country that never heard the name before.”

Tapping into the Canadian market is just the beginning. York envisions the brand to keep growing rapidly year after year, with hopes to become the largest gym concept in 15 years.  How will this lofty goal turn into a reality? By constantly evolving and never falling behind.

“From a corporate standpoint, putting the right systems in place and automating as much as possible is key,” said York. “If you don’t keep evolving as a concept, you fall behind. Sure, there will be mistakes and challenges along the way, but if you learn from those mistakes and learn from those around you, you will consistently move forward.”

The evolution of the concept paired with its how easily it is able to enter into new territories will allow for York’s global vision to happen sooner than later.

“I can see GYMGUYZ working anywhere,” said Craig. “This isn’t just an American thing. There are people who are overweight or are struggling to find the motivation to make it to a brick and mortar gym all over the world. Every single human could find use out of the service, so I know it has the potential to be successful everywhere.”
