The Baltimore Sun: Sylvan Learning CEO John McAuliffe Leads New Focus on STEM Skills

Sylvan Learning CEO John McAuliffe wants to focus on more specialized areas in science, technology, engineering and math.

Baltimore-based Sylvan Learning* is developing not only its national presence, but also its educational content focus under the leadership of new CEO John McAuliffe.

With a growing emphasis on STEM skills and career-readiness due demand from parents, the brand is making changes to meet the need.

"We want to stay relevant" and reach "children who want to accelerate and have an interest in different subject matter," said McAuliffe, who stepped into the CEO role in January after serving as the brand's CFO for the past six years. "The science and technology area seems to be really taking off."

He believes Sylvan has an edge over competitors because of the range of subjects and because its centers are staffed by part-time teachers who understand the importance of integrating fun into learning. Sylvan operates 615 franchised centers and 11 that are company-owned.

"We focus on building a child's self-confidence and inspiring their intellectual curiosity and love of learning," he said. "We spend a lot of time on that. We believe you need a teacher, and that teacher is the key to building confidence in the child."
