Famous pitmaster Dave Anderson, better known as "Famous Dave" from his eponymous barbecue restaurant franchise, recently hosted the second annual All Star BBQ Championship in Columbia, Maryland. The event offered $5,000 in prize money, as well as a spot in the finals of the prestigious World Food Championships this fall. Local pitmasters competed in categories such as best barbecue chicken, ribs and a wild card round, where chefs showcased their creativity with any barbecue dish of their choice.
“It’s amazing what they turn in,” Anderson told WTOP News before the event. “Anything from desserts to some main dishes. But it’s all barbecue.”
The public was invited to attend, enjoy free samples and even vote on their favorite pitmaster while enjoying live music and games in a family-friendly atmosphere. Anderson encouraged spectators to interact with the competitors, ask questions and learn about barbecue techniques. The event was a complete success, with overall winner Shawn Overbey, representing Team Meat Coma, taking home the gold.
The competition is a stepping stone to the World Food Championships in Indianapolis this November, where the winner will vie for a top prize of $150,000 out of a total $400,000 prize pool. Anderson describes barbecue as America's "celebration food" and sees the event as a great way to bring people together.
