He was successful in his business, but he found himself consistently traveling between locations, always on the phone and less than fulfilled. While auto repair shops are a necessary business, Leftkowitz said they’re not one that many consumers are thrilled to be visiting.&nbsp;So, Lefkowitz made the decision to begin selling his AAMCO franchises and looking for what he called his “ice cream shop” — a business that would be joyful both for him to run and for his customers to visit. He focused on the salon suites franchise industry, knowing it would be fulfilling to provide beauty professionals with a space to build their businesses while offering clients and customers a place to enjoy their self-care services.&nbsp;Toward the end of his due diligence process,&nbsp;Lefkowitz ran into an existing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.solasalonstudios.com/franchising?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=former-aamco-franchisee-invests-in-sola-salons-signs-for-two-additional-units-before-opening-his-first-2728603" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Sola Salons</a> franchisee on a golf course, and that made him even more confident in his decision to pursue franchising with the brand. Then, after signing a single-unit franchise agreement — and in the midst of development for his North Phoenix location — an opportunity arose to open another unit in the Scottsdale area, and he signed for another two franchises.&nbsp;Lefkowitz took the time to chat with 1851 Franchise to discuss all of this and more. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Scott Lefkowitz:&nbsp;I started my career in CRM software sales during the early 2000s, back when the tech world was insane. After a few years in that space, I decided I needed a change, so I moved into the automotive industry. I worked for AAMCO, starting as a corporate employee, and eventually became a multi-unit franchisee, running several locations for about 15 years.Though the business was successful, it was emotionally draining. I would often tell my wife that I wanted to own an “ice cream shop” — metaphorically speaking. I wanted to be in a business where people were happy to be there — somewhere positive, unlike the stressful, uncertain atmosphere of the auto repair world.For years, I searched for that “ice cream shop,” and a few years ago, I was introduced to the salon industry. I explored different concepts but didn’t pull the trigger right away. Then, about two years ago, I finally decided this was the direction I wanted to go, and I chose&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/sola-salons/info">Sola Salons</a>.One of the most interesting parts of this story is that I signed with Sola for two additional units before I even opened my first. An opportunity and piece of real estate that I just could not pass up came to my attention, and that’s why I committed to additional units.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Lefkowitz:&nbsp;There are a couple of things I wish I had known. When I worked for AAMCO corporate before becoming a franchisee, I had a pretty good understanding of what I was getting into. But with Sola, I didn’t have that same insight, other than from the people I spoke with. My past experience helped ease some of that uncertainty.The other thing I’ve realized is that, even though I’m part of a franchise, it’s still ultimately my responsibility. I’m the one who has to put food on the table. No matter how much support I get, it’s not the franchisor on the line — it’s me. That was something I didn’t fully grasp at first. With AAMCO, I initially thought if I just opened the doors, people would magically show up — but it’s not that simple. It takes a lot more effort and strategy to make it work.1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Lefkowitz:&nbsp;Sola was my metaphorical ice cream shop. The Pros are happy to be there because they love what they do, and their clients are happy to be there getting services, too. I also love that the model gives the Pros a bit more independence. I don’t have employees to manage. I’m not in charge of making sure the Pros show up to work. They’re entrepreneurs, too, and it’s their decision to make and their business that will be impacted.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Lefkowitz:&nbsp;I have an agreement for three total locations. My plan is to get these first two open then take a big, deep breath before starting on the third. I’m 53, so once I’m operating and acclimated with all three locations, I might consider opening additional locations, but only if the circumstances are perfect. I do not want to scale like I did with AAMCO and find myself in a position where I’m in the car with the phone glued to my ear all day, just going from one location to another to make sure everything is functioning well.1851:&nbsp;Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Lefkowitz:&nbsp;My wife will be working alongside me to operate these. She’ll be the first line of defense for helping the Pros, and I’ll be the support staff — handling maintenance issues and such. We have defined roles, and I’m excited for that. As an entrepreneur, you can never fully “turn off” the business, but I’m excited to step into a scenario where I’m not needed 24/7.1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Lefkowitz:&nbsp;People really need to understand that it’s not a scenario where “If you build it, they will come.” Having the backing of a franchise really helps, but you do still have to do the work. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. You only have to look at my credit card bill to see what a big industry kids' sports is — I've got two kids obsessed with them. I’ve heard some horror stories about other franchises, and every time I say to myself, “That hasn’t been my experience at all.”&nbsp;1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. He gets excited about business ideas. And I share that to some degree. I was a consultant with one of the large privately owned consulting firms in the Washington, D.C., area and throughout the country. I did general consulting, but my primary focus was on national security, physical security and personnel security. I worked there for 24 years.Back in June 2025, because of everything going on with the economy and the administration, my firm had to cut $5 billion worth of contracts. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs. I wanted to make this my future as well, so I decided to go into the franchise business with Fresh Coat Painters.Grigsby:&nbsp;We looked at several franchises before selecting Fresh Coat.
