Before opening his Fresh Coat* Painters business, Jim Pavletich spent years in executive leadership roles within the health care industry, including serving as CEO and chief operations officer for organizations tied to the American Medical Association and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. He later moved into the tech world, spending more than seven years managing CRM software installation projects. Pavletich decided he wanted something different: the chance to take control of his professional future and build a business culture of his own.
That decision led him through a months-long discovery process before ultimately choosing Fresh Coat Painters. Pavletich was drawn to the company’s structured approach, strong customer service focus and support system in an industry he saw as highly fragmented. Now, with support from his partner Beth, he’s officially launched the business and is focused on serving homeowners and communities throughout Morris, Joliet and the surrounding area.
Pavletich sat down with 1851 Franchise to discuss how his corporate background led him to business ownership and why Fresh Coat Painters felt like the right fit for his next chapter. Here’s what he had to say:
1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?
Jim Pavletich: Before transitioning into business ownership, I spent my career in association management, serving as COO and CEO for various health care-related organizations, including the American Medical Association and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. I also spent seven and a half years as a senior project manager installing CRM software, which gave me highly transferable skills in client satisfaction and resource alignment. Ultimately, my motivation for this career transition was driven by a desire to bet on myself, gain control over my work environment, and build a professional culture of my own.
1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?
Pavletich: I was deep in the corporate world, managing associations and software projects. I decided to look into franchising because I was ready to bet on myself and wanted the satisfaction of working from home and operating locally right here in Morris. I started working with a franchise coach in September, and it was a four-month discovery process that eventually led me to this opportunity.
1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?
Pavletich: I knew it involved a significant resource commitment and a degree of risk. Now that I am in it, I want people to know how incredibly valuable the franchise community is. It serves as a fantastic resource for solving daily operational challenges. The network is a highly supportive environment where other owners actively share their unique perspectives and past experiences to assist newer franchisees like me.
1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?
Pavletich: I chose Fresh Coat over other options primarily due to the presence of national accounts, which offer long-term revenue potential within the territory, as well as the company's established system of approximately 200 territories. I also appreciated the availability of the Franchise Disclosure Document, which allowed me to analyze business performance metrics. What excites me most about the industry itself is that painting is highly fragmented, with no single entity dominating the market. This presents a massive opportunity to use a structured, customer-service-oriented approach to capture market share from independent painters who may lack marketing or estimating infrastructure.
1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?
Pavletich: My immediate goal is to scale the business by acquiring sufficient inbound volume so that I can hire project consultants (estimators) and project managers. Looking further ahead, my long-term goal includes fully saturating our current territory and potentially expanding into additional contiguous territories if our financial performance supports that level of growth.
1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?
Pavletich: I am very active in our local community here in Morris, where I serve on the board of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. I also have to mention my partner, Beth. She actually attended the Cincinnati training with me and remains a very active advocate and behind-the-scenes supporter of the business. We are also looking into utilizing TikTok for marketing and leveraging our family's support for content creation.
1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?
Pavletich: I highly advise prospective franchisees to conduct thorough self-assessment and soul-searching before committing. It is incredibly important to ensure that this decision aligns with your personal financial readiness and your long-term life goals.
