Knowing the reputation and value of a brand, and joining it through business ownership, can enrich someone’s life; Joseph Downs took that leap and is bringing the first Smoothie King to Oklahoma City.

Originally from Texas, Joseph moved to New Orleans at the age of 11 and stayed through his first year of college. Joseph then made the decision to join the Army Reserves, which relocated him to Arizona. While enlisted, Joseph earned his AAS in Military Intelligence.

After four years in Arizona, Joseph returned to his family in Mandeville, LA, where he decided to join the police force. During his 7.5 year career Joseph worked his way up from regular patrol to detective. In 2012, in the midst of his public service work, Joseph’s mother became very ill with a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's disease, prompting the entire family to be on-hand to ensure she received the proper care and nutrition.

Because he grew up in New Orleans, Joseph was familiar with the Smoothie King brand, and it was here he learned that smoothies provided the appropriate nourishment his mother needed. After her battle with the disease and her eventual passing, Joseph was inspired to spread the Smoothie King name in honor of his mother. Through research, Joseph and his wife learned the brand did not have a location in Oklahoma City. Before even having a potential site in mind, the Downs relocated to a new city to start their careers as business owners.

How did you learn about the brand?
Being that I grew up in New Orleans, I was very familiar with the Smoothie King name, since the brand is headquartered there and has 17 locations.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Smoothie King?
When my mother was diagnosed with ALS we found that smoothies had all of the proper nutrients she needed. The brand also changed my mentality; I always thought smoothies were an “in-between meal” snack, but I learned they are a healthy meal alternative. I researched in Oklahoma City but didn’t find many healthful dining choices, and because of this I felt the city was the ultimate location for the next Smoothie King.

Are you involved with any charities or do any community outreach with your business?
We would like to be involved with the local schools and food banks to help the community in any way we can.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
The only challenge was the fear of the unknown. I am not too fond of change, and it was scary to move to start a business on our own. Through the power of prayer I went with it. We know that with hard work we will be successful.

What is your end goal with Smoothie King?
Well my first goal is to really make sure this first location sees success. My dream goal is open five stores in five years, but this depends on the success of the first store.
