Originally from Columbia, South Carolina, Stephan Swafford recently acquired the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.rightathomefranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=franchisee-spotlight-stephan-swafford-of-right-at-home-12190" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Right at Home*</a> in North Augusta&nbsp;after the previous owners retired after 12 years in business.

Swafford is a former Augusta, Georgia,&nbsp;local and recently moved back after living out West for five years. Before he moved,&nbsp;he was a member of the board of directors for the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and worked in management at Verizon Wireless. Looking to get into business ownership and move back to Augusta, Swafford searched for opportunities where he could combine his strong business acumen with his passion to help people.&nbsp;By taking over the local Right at Home, he hopes to alleviate the stress and worry that comes with handling care for aging loved ones.&nbsp;

What were you doing before you chose to open a Right at Home?&nbsp;&nbsp;

I worked in telecommunications for 27 years, the last 22 of those being for Verizon Wireless. I managed multiple retail locations and did indirect sales. I thought owning a business would be a good next step and I wanted to help others and get them where they wanted to be. I am originally from South Carolina, and we wanted to get close to family and get involved with something that was meaningful. Right at Home was a great fit.

Why was Right at Home the right brand for you?

I was looking at different opportunities, and thought about going into business for myself. I saw an opportunity in Augusta after looking at other cities and I was glad it was close to home. I investigated the brand because I don&rsquo;t have a background in healthcare. Right at Home has a great history in this industry and their corporate office is great and they care about the people. It&rsquo;s all about people. It&rsquo;s not a product that we are selling, it&rsquo;s people caring about people. You don&rsquo;t have to be an expert in healthcare to be an expert in people. There&rsquo;s definitely a need for our services. This company provides solutions people are looking for that they may not have without us

What were your perceptions of franchising before starting the process?

I had a negative connotation on franchising because I thought it was nothing but the fast-food industry. But in this industry, in-home healthcare, you have more control. Right at Home helps you and gives you support, but you still feel like a small business. I don&rsquo;t think people realize it&rsquo;s a franchise. They know that we are insured and that we care. It also helps to have the brand to stand behind you for creditability

What do you hope to accomplish with Right at Home?

I want to appreciate people and know the value that they bring, and be thankful for all that they help me with. It&rsquo;s about helping people develop and creating a great work environment. They are a part of this and we are a team that works together and helps each other out. You learn early on in managing, you can make it your way, their way, or our way. In the end our way is always the best way.&nbsp;

I think putting that out there makes people curious. And then you click in, and it's their life story and their experiences. The reader likely doesn’t know this person, specifically, but it’s possible they have very similar experiences.I think that can draw people in more effectively than “This restaurant is growing!” or “This business is opening!” ever could.1851: How do you tell your writers to find the human hero in the story?Wood:&nbsp;We have talked a lot about continuing to ask the questions. Again, everyone has a story. We just have to get to it. I've said countless times, “Just keep asking. There has to be something. Think outside the box. Get curious on these calls with the franchisee, and really think about what is special about this person.”&nbsp;One of our questions for franchisee feature interviews is “What do you want me to know about you?” That opens it up. Regardless of your business or what you did before you bought a franchise, what do you want me to know about you?Being able to do that and dig deeper, even when there may not be an immediate connection between this story and their franchise journey, is really valuable. There have been times when it “clicks” later, and the writer realizes, “Oh, that's why they're the hero!”1851: Headlines and images are the first two things that people see. Are there any tricks in your bag when it comes to headlines and imagery to get picked up?Wood: Specifically in headlines, we want to talk about the human hero, but we don't necessarily want to say their name. We want to say who they are.&nbsp;More people are going to search for things like “veteran franchisee” or “moms in franchising”&nbsp; rather than a name that they’ve never heard before.It also has to be interesting, but you can't give everything away in the headline.&nbsp;And then with the image, just as much as possible, get a picture of a real person. It’s as simple as having something that people care about, and something that will catch a reader’s eye. If we’re talking about a person, we don’t want a stock image that someone will scroll right past.1851: Do you have any advice that you would give brands looking to get started right away?Wood: I think many in the franchise space have heard of the franchise horror stories: “I pay my franchise fee and the franchisor disappears,” or “I'm just a store number to them, I'm not a person.”One of our clients often says that, to be a franchisor, you need to understand what the franchisee is going through.
