I was at an IFA event when I met [MSA managing director] <a href="https://www.msaworldwide.com/about-us/msa-senior-team/michael-seid/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=frandev-players-kay-ainsley-managing-director-msa-worldwide-2715049" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Michael Seid</a>, he was looking for someone to partner with and we talked about franchising and everything kind of fell into place. It’s been 23 years and we’re still partners.<h4>1851: Are there any keys to consistent franchise growth?</h4>Ainsley: You need a process and you need to put all candidates through that process. From there you eliminate the people who don’t meet your criteria and focus on those who are able to close. As a franchisor, you should constantly be reevaluating who you want in your system, and who that person is varies from brand to brand.&nbsp;So, having a profile is key. Are you looking for the single unit owner to operate or a group to do area development? Who are you looking for and what are you selling? Today we see more and more people looking to do area development with a commitment to multiple units, but that doesn’t necessarily work for every franchisor.&nbsp;For new franchisors, staying close to home is important. In the early days you don’t know what operating as a franchisor looks and feels like and you want to make sure your first franchisees have the tools they need to be successful. If you’re only 100 miles away, you are able to support them that same day if they need you. But, if you have to hop on a plane, that’s a little bit harder and a little more costly.In the early days their royalties are smaller, and they need more help. But that won’t always be the case as you grow.<h4>1851: What are the biggest hurdles to successful franchise growth right now?</h4>Ainsley: One of the biggest hurdles to franchise growth during COVID is the fact that you can’t actually meet people to consult with them, and it takes longer to get someone open and operating. Franchisors are looking for new ways to provide support to existing franchisees and looking for ways to recruit prospective franchisees.One way that franchisors have been making that connection is with virtual Discovery Days. The only hurdle with that is that you need to make sure it's structured in a way that you get the same results that you would have gotten during an in-person meeting.&nbsp;<h4>1851: How did the COVID crisis affect franchise growth opportunities?</h4>Ainsley: On a more positive note, COVID has made a lot of people sit back and think, “I don't know what the future of my company looks like, and I might be better off to start my own company.” And with franchising, even if they don’t have the experience of owning their own business, they have the support of the franchisor behind them.<h4>1851: Are there any common mistakes you see franchisors making when trying to grow?</h4>Ainsley: Franchisors sometimes get hung up on approving somebody just because they need the fee because they’re undercapitalized. If you need to sell three franchises to keep the lights on and you’re changing criteria to take on people who might not meet your standards just to meet those needs, you might run into trouble. Relationships could suffer because expectations are different than reality, or it could be that the franchisor doesn’t have the ability to provide adequate support and their internal staff is stretched thin. You’re kind of building a house of cards at that point.Another big one is going too far from home. You should be open to turning someone down because they’re far away. The other thing is, franchise sales are consultative sales. Franchisors lead prospects through the process — you learn about them, they learn about you and you want to be willing to say no to people who don’t fit properly. To build that rapport and make that decision, you need to only have one person assigned to one candidate. You don’t want that candidate passed from person to person to person as they’re doing their due diligence because that creates a disconnect in the candidate’s mind.&nbsp;I tell companies who are evaluating franchising their brands that before becoming a franchisor, they need to budget enough money to do adequate lead generation. If they don’t have the ability to do that, they sometimes falter. Without the money to do PR and lead generation, they never get that good stiff wind at their back to take off. We get them to the starting gate, but if they can’t hire anyone to get leads out for them they’ll limp along and five years later they’ll still be limping.&nbsp;<h4>1851: What are your biggest goals/plans for 2021?</h4>Ainsley: We’re planning to keep doing what we’re doing. We’re fortunate in that there is still an interest in franchising. We work with people and companies who are evaluating candidates and see the value of franchising as a method of expansion. I’m looking forward to working with new companies and creating franchise opportunities for others.

For franchisors, this means one key thing: you must know exactly where candidates spend their time. No guesswork. And you have to adjust your strategy accordingly.And, in today's buyer world, the biggest buzz term is 2026's ride or die for franchise brands – Ai.&nbsp;If you are trying to sell a franchise today, you must meet candidates where they are (four walls, Ai, website, social advertising).&nbsp;Focusing on a strong digital footprint first and then lead generation will help the brand with validation and will lay the foundation for trust before the first conversation even happens. Still, franchisors must know where to find their candidates and be confident the candidates are being sent to the right place.“We consistently see the strongest lead performance from Google Search (paid and organic), social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn and our franchise development website,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/erinlsnyder">Erin Snyder</a>, head of franchise development at&nbsp;<a href="https://handelsicecream.com/handels-franchise/">Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream</a>. “Because all awareness and advertising efforts ultimately funnel candidates to our development site, maintaining a highly optimized, mobile-first web presence is critical for conversion.”<h2>The "Hidden" Channels: Authentic Research via AiSEO</h2>While Google and major portals are often where a candidate might start a broad search, the deep research happens in the shadows. This is where candidates scroll, mindlessly or otherwise, simply observing rather than clicking “apply” immediately; or, ask Ai chatbots about the best franchises to buy, the blind spots, the why nots, and, of course, the whys.Right now, Ai plays a key role in this research stage. There is no single, magical approach to budgeting; a brand selling multi-million-dollar franchises needs to develop a presence in different places than a low-cost, mobile franchise will.To spend effectively, you must deeply understand your ideal franchisee profile. Once you know who is investing, you can begin working on where to find them. It’s really fun.1851:&nbsp;What do you think about Mainland’s “Brands don’t sell brands, people do” method?Wood:&nbsp;When I'm browsing, I'm going to click on stuff that I feel like I relate to or something that is a human interest story.In franchising, people often think, “I'd love to do that, but I don't know if I can,” or “Somebody else can do it, but I just can't.”&nbsp;Being able to see the kind of person that's doing it, and, no matter who you are, there's someone who has a similar background or that you can relate to in some way, that has done it. I think putting that out there makes people curious. And then you click in, and it's their life story and their experiences. The reader likely doesn’t know this person, specifically, but it’s possible they have very similar experiences.I think that can draw people in more effectively than “This restaurant is growing!” or “This business is opening!” ever could.1851: How do you tell your writers to find the human hero in the story?Wood:&nbsp;We have talked a lot about continuing to ask the questions. Again, everyone has a story. We just have to get to it. I've said countless times, “Just keep asking. There has to be something. Think outside the box. Get curious on these calls with the franchisee, and really think about what is special about this person.”&nbsp;One of our questions for franchisee feature interviews is “What do you want me to know about you?” That opens it up. Regardless of your business or what you did before you bought a franchise, what do you want me to know about you?Being able to do that and dig deeper, even when there may not be an immediate connection between this story and their franchise journey, is really valuable. There have been times when it “clicks” later, and the writer realizes, “Oh, that's why they're the hero!”1851: Headlines and images are the first two things that people see. Are there any tricks in your bag when it comes to headlines and imagery to get picked up?Wood: Specifically in headlines, we want to talk about the human hero, but we don't necessarily want to say their name. We want to say who they are.&nbsp;More people are going to search for things like “veteran franchisee” or “moms in franchising”&nbsp; rather than a name that they’ve never heard before.It also has to be interesting, but you can't give everything away in the headline.&nbsp;And then with the image, just as much as possible, get a picture of a real person. It’s as simple as having something that people care about, and something that will catch a reader’s eye. If we’re talking about a person, we don’t want a stock image that someone will scroll right past.1851: Do you have any advice that you would give brands looking to get started right away?Wood: I think many in the franchise space have heard of the franchise horror stories: “I pay my franchise fee and the franchisor disappears,” or “I'm just a store number to them, I'm not a person.”One of our clients often says that, to be a franchisor, you need to understand what the franchisee is going through. When someone at the franchisor gets home from work, their family will ask, “How was work?” When a franchisee gets home, their family is asking, “How were sales today?” or “How was traffic?” These are franchise units, but they often represent the investment of someone’s life savings and a manifestation of so many hopes and dreams for the future. We can’t lose sight of that.&nbsp;No matter how big the brand gets or how fast they're growing, franchisors need to remember that these are real people with real backgrounds. <a href="https://hardeesfranchising.com/">Hardee’s</a>, a 65-year-old burger chain best known for its Thickburgers and breakfast biscuits, is facing a fast-moving round of closures driven by a franchise dispute rather than a bankruptcy filing.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.inc.com/ava-levinson/hardees-shutting-dozens-restaurants/91282586">Inc. recently reported that</a> 77&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/franchise-deep-dive-hardees-franchise-costs-fees-profit-and-data-2721286">Hardee’s</a> restaurants are expected to close within two weeks as one of the brand’s largest franchisees exits the system.&nbsp;According to the report, Hardee’s is suing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.arcburger.com/">ARC Burger</a> — a franchise operator owned by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.highbluffcap.com/">High Bluff Capital Partners</a> — alleging the company fell behind on required payments and other contract obligations. Twenty-eight locations had already gone dark as of late December, with remaining sites scheduled to shutter across eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, South Carolina and Wyoming.&nbsp;At the center of the complaint is the franchising “stack” of ongoing fees and pass-through costs that keep a system running. ARC Burger allegedly owes more than $6.5 million, including royalties, advertising fund contributions, technology and training fees, rent and taxes, and that payments stopped in December 2024. Hardee’s also argued in the lawsuit that the franchisee’s cash flow was not being used to bring accounts current.&nbsp;Hardee’s, for its part, is framing the shutdowns as a contractual enforcement issue, not a brand-wide retrenchment. “These closures are a result of ARC Burger’s failure to cure its defaults under its franchise agreements, despite solid sales,” a Hardee’s spokesperson said.&nbsp;The situation highlights a familiar franchising pressure point: unit economics.
