Fresh Coat Painters, the national painting franchise with more than 190 locations, has provided a pathway for countless entrepreneurs to chase their dreams and build businesses for themselves and legacies for their families. One of the often overlooked benefits of franchise ownership, though, is the impact franchisees have on their communities and on families beyond their own. At Fresh Coat, this comes in many forms, from steady employment opportunities to Fresh Coat Cares projects.
“My husband and I got into franchising after reviewing many other companies. We liked the sense of community that Fresh Coat offered through the business,” said Isabel Calero, owner of Fresh Coat Painters of Johns Creek in Georgia. “The way you grow your business and how it gives back to the community … Fresh Coat promotes this. I enjoy working with our customers, being around other Fresh Coat owners, learning about nonprofits in my community and making sure we show a token of appreciation for the customers who have helped us grow our business.”
Growing With Integrity and Giving Back to the Community
Calero and her husband, Diego Berto, have been able to show their kids how hard work can pay off through their own business growth, and they’ve also highlighted how meaningful it can be to grow with integrity while working in a business that they truly feel good about.
In addition to providing quality painting services to her community, Calero has completed multiple Fresh Coat Cares projects.
“We did a project with Rainbow Village in Duluth,” Calero said. “They help families get back on their feet and in their homes after they’ve lost everything. They help them with getting a home, getting a job and getting their family back together. We painted all of their front doors Positive Red from Sherwin-Williams so each door had a fresh coat of paint.”
Calero also described a Fresh Coat Cares project she completed for Spectrum Autism in Duluth. This organization serves as a support network for people with autism and their families.
“We’ve been able to help them through painting their retaining walls, gutters … Little things that help their area look nicer for when they have community events,” she said. “Fresh Coat was a big supporter for us in completing this project, which is something I really love about being a part of this system.”
Making an Impact Through Opportunity
For Sarah Ross, owner of Fresh Coat Painters of Marble Falls, Southwest Austin and Hill Country, Fresh Coat Cares projects have been a consistent part of her ownership journey. Ross has been a Fresh Coat franchisee for 13 years, and she’s completed at least 13 Fresh Coat Cares projects to date.
Her most recent project was with a local thrift store that benefits the Highland Lakes Family Crisis Network. Ross was introduced to the organization through other community and networking events, but when she had an opportunity to support the organization further through a Fresh Coat Cares project, she jumped on it.
“The benefit of Fresh Coat Cares is the opportunity it allows through Fresh Coat corporate and Sherwin-Williams to keep us active in the community,” she said. “We cover some of the expense for these projects, but they do, too. Their support gives us the opportunity to say yes when we’re approached by someone in need. It’s rewarding for me, and it’s rewarding for our team members who get to experience being a part of the project, too.”
Ross explained that these projects are meaningful both in the moment and in the weeks, months and years following. Every time the team drives past the site of a previous Fresh Coat Cares project, they’re reminded of how they helped their community.
In addition to the community support offered through Fresh Coat Cares, Ross finds deep meaning in the impact she’s able to have on her own teams.
“I think most people get into business ownership for the benefit of being their own boss, but the benefit that I wasn’t expecting when I started this journey was the pride that comes in being able to employ others,” she said. “I didn’t anticipate how rewarding that would be. The painters that work for us are appreciative to have work. They work hard for what they earn, and we’re able to support them by being out there trying to secure the projects. By helping ensure the opportunity is there, we’re helping them put food on their tables. That is so rewarding.”
By providing steady opportunity, Ross has been able to establish strong relationships with her teams and has seen remarkable employee tenure within her organization. She’s celebrated professional anniversaries, including employees who have reached 10 years with the company, but she’s also witnessed personal growth and milestones, like kids being born.
“My team is a second family to me,” she said. “From the anniversaries we’ve celebrated to the children that have been born … They’re more than just employees to us. That’s another aspect of ownership that has been so positive.”
More Than Just a Business Model
Fresh Coat Painters certainly offers a tried-and-true business model for franchisees looking to build an asset. But it also represents an opportunity to make a lasting difference. From completing Fresh Coat Cares projects to building work environments where teams have both the opportunity and support necessary to grow and thrive, Fresh Coat franchise owners are able to change both their own lives and those of others in their communities, building both an asset and a legacy.
