Entrepreneurship has always been a part of Jay Patel’s family, but he never had the support and resources he felt were necessary to confidently make the transition to business ownership himself. So over the years, he has built a successful career in manufacturing, even serving as a supervisor at Ford’s Kentucky truck plant for a decade. But business ownership was always in the back of his mind. When recent family circumstances again pushed him to consider going into business, he decided to look at franchising. After discovering Fresh Coat Painters, the national painting franchise with over 190 locations, he was confident he’d have the resources necessary to succeed as an entrepreneur and build the life he envisioned for himself and his family.
“I have parents who are about 70 years old. I take care of them full-time while working a full-time job, as well,” Patel said. “My motivation is my wife and daughter. They’re still in India, and I see them once or twice a year. It’s been like that for the past three years. I’m really trying to build a future for them — a better life than I had. When they get here, I want them to see that we’re building something that’s going to last for generations to come, and I want them to be proud of who I’m becoming through this process.”
A Journey Rooted in Work Ethic and Ambition
Patel immigrated to the United States from India at just 5 years old. He was consistently exposed to small business ownership and developed a strong work ethic as he grew up. As he built his own career, he focused on developing a range of skills and experiencing as much as he could.
From supervising operations at a Ford manufacturing plant in Kentucky to operating a cell phone business in Houston, Texas, Patel has developed management, operational and people skills in a variety of contexts.
His work has also allowed him to develop personally and has provided valuable context for making his own business ownership decisions.
“I’ve been to 37 different states,” he said. “I’ve moved around quite a bit, and I’ve seen different types of culture and different types of business. What brought me to Fresh Coat specifically was the systems. It sounded like the support was there, so I went ahead and took a shot on it.”
While Patel didn’t have professional experience in home services or the trades prior to joining Fresh Coat, he’s a DIY enthusiast and understood that his role as owner would be focused more on leadership and business development than the painting itself.
Fresh Coat provides systems and leadership, and the team has shown genuine care for Patel and his success.
“What ultimately pushed me to choose Fresh Coat was the people in general,” he said. “They are really down-to-earth people. They are very understanding. They wanted to be there to help and guide me through every question I had throughout the process.”
As Patel has navigated the process of launching his Fresh Coat franchise while maintaining another full-time job, caring for his parents full-time and working to permanently reunite with his wife and daughter, he says the support of Fresh Coat’s leadership team has been critical.
“Lisa [Hudson] and her team at the home office — they’re awesome,” he said. “When I got into this, I explained exactly what my situation was, and I had a lot of support.”
Looking Ahead: Building a Family Legacy
As Patel works to expand local brand awareness and build teams of painters, he remains focused on long-term financial independence in preparation for his wife and daughter’s arrival in the U.S.
“I don’t want to be at my ‘nine-to-five,’ if you want to call it that, forever,” Patel said. “I’ve done it because I have responsibilities to take care of, but my vision is to grow my Fresh Coat into something that will support us for a long time.”
