Kimberly Nelson, a devoted mother and stepmother of five, set out to build a lasting legacy for her children—a mission that led her to the world of franchising. With over 20 years of experience in business-to-business sales and staffing, she was used to helping companies thrive — but she wanted to do something for herself. Having grown up in a family business where her mother owned an art gallery, she was always creative and passionate about making an impact. Franchising offered the perfect opportunity to apply her skills while building something sustainable for her family. When her husband stumbled upon the Fresh Coat franchise opportunity, they knew it was the right fit for her. Now, with the support of her husband, Bobby Nelson — her number one cheerleader and the financial brains behind the operation — she’s on her way to building her business and creating generational wealth.

1851 Franchise sat down with Nelson to discuss her franchising journey with Fresh Coat Painters and her plans for the future. Here’s what she had to say:

1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?

Kimberly Nelson: I’ve been in sales for over 20 years and have done well — my husband, Bobby, is the COO of an oil and gas company, and together, we have a blended family of five children. I’ve always wanted to do something for myself that I could build for the next generation. Growing up in a family business, with my mom owning an art gallery, I always had a creative drive, but I also wanted to make a tangible impact. Franchising felt like the best way to combine my experience and ambitions. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience, especially with such a supportive franchise family.

1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?

Nelson: Before franchising, I was in sales. I wanted to combine my passion with my skills, and franchising provided the perfect platform for that. I also value the business coaching, resources and collaboration with fellow franchisees that the franchise offers. The support from the vendor lists and marketing department has been invaluable in helping me succeed.

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Nelson: I used to think of franchising as just fast food chains or managing a ton of employees. But now, I see it as a way to be a business owner with all the support needed to succeed. It’s an empowering experience — especially with a corporate team that’s truly dedicated to helping you grow your business.

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Nelson: I didn’t know there were other painting franchises until I met the sales rep for Fresh Coat. He really took the time to connect with me, and we had a great rapport. Everything about this opportunity felt right — especially when I realized the resources available to help me succeed. It was a good connection, and that’s what excites me the most — being part of a brand that cares about its franchisees.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?

Nelson: I’m excited to grow this business — getting it up and running and eventually expanding. My ultimate goal is to create generational wealth for my children and leave them a legacy. We’re also planning to continue expanding the business within the community.

1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?

Nelson: The people I’ve met in the franchise network have been so supportive, and that’s made all the difference. Everyone truly wants to see each other succeed, which makes it such a great environment. Plus, my husband, Bobby, is my biggest supporter and helps with all the finances and behind-the-scenes work, which is a huge help in keeping the business organized.

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?

Nelson: Make sure you’re passionate about what you’re getting into. Franchising is a great option, but it’s important to find a brand that’s a good fit for you. The corporate team is really there to support you, and you need to feel confident in their ability to help you succeed. Ask questions, get to know the people, and ensure you feel comfortable with your decision.
