This past January, in the lead-up to the Super Bowl LII, the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis hosted a 10-day festival called Super Bowl LIVE. The public and free celebration included concerts, food, activities and a number of charitable events. One event with a particularly Bold North twist was the Polar Plunge, an icy challenge sponsored in part by Great Clips. Along with numerous area organizations, local franchisees, corporate staff, and friends of the iconic hair-salon franchise took the plunge to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota.

Even for Minnesotans, celebrated as they are for their hardiness against towering snowbanks and frigid temperatures, the Polar Plunge proved a daunting feat. Held on January 30, the temperature dipped below 20 degrees at times throughout the day. As the afternoon sun disappeared, participants took turns diving into an unheated outdoor pool before returning to the warmth of their towels and hot chocolate.

Despite the challenge, Polar Plunge participants maxed out the event’s capacity. Participants were required to register in advance and raise a minimum of $150 before their spot was reserved. Ultimately, 700 plungers raised $200,000 to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota.

On top of that sum, Great Clips, which was founded and remains headquartered in Minneapolis, contributed an additional $50,000 as a primary sponsor. Tammy Nienaber, Great Clips’ director of communications, said that contribution reflects the brand’s ongoing commitment to supporting its local communities.

“One of our core values is we are kind. Giving back to the community is not just a nice idea, we all work together to live it,” Nienaber said. “We are always looking for opportunities to help out and support the communities surrounding Great Clips salons across the United States and Canada, and the Polar Plunge was a great opportunity for us to make a big impact right here at home.”

The Super Bowl LIVE Polar Plunge is not the only charitable event Great Clips is sponsoring or participating in this year. In fact, it’s not even the only Polar Plunge the brand is sponsoring. The franchise is the primary sponsor for eight Minnesota-area Polar Plunge events in 2018. As a sponsor of the Legacy fund, Great Clips donated $50,000 to build a new accessible playground in one of the city’s northern suburbs. Beyond the financial support, Great Clips corporate team members shared their time and talents, adding a fresh coat of paint to the park’s shelter. Nienaber says that spirit of philanthropy extends to every Great Clips location.

“We lead by example in the corporate office,” she said. “We encourage all of our owners to stay active in their communities, and we make sure they have the tools and resources to do that.”

Great Clips’ commitment to supporting its local communities extends beyond financial donations, encouraging owners and employees to get outside of their stores and participate in local events and programs. Nienaber says the Super Bowl LIVE Polar Plunge event was a perfect opportunity to demonstrate that philosophy in action.

“Money is important, and we strive to make a financial impact for the causes we feel strongly about, but we also provide programs and resources to help local salon owners actively engage in their communities,” Nienaber said. “The Polar Plunge was a great example of that. We had corporate staff, franchisees, family, and friends participating in the event and having a blast, all wearing red Great Clips T-shirts.”
