Hand & Stone provides comprehensive training to its franchisees through a structured program designed to ensure successful operations. The training is divided into four key components: an initial training program (mandatory for designated manager and up to three additional assistants) lasting for two weeks at the franchisor’s headquarters or another designated location, initial massage protocol training (mandatory for lead therapist and therapists) over the course of two days, ongoing training (not be required more than two times per year and will not exceed seven days) and additional/remedial training as deemed necessary.
Hand & Stone offers comprehensive operational support to its franchisees, ensuring they have the necessary resources and guidance to run successful centers. This support includes access to the confidential operations e-manual as well as a proven system. The franchisor also provides feedback regarding site selection and will provide prototype construction plans, specifications, layouts and equipment requirements. Brand and marketing support will be provided from a national marketing fund which all franchisees contribute to, funding some national advertising, promotional, public relations and other marketing programs.
Hand & Stone equips its franchisees with a suite of technology tools designed to streamline operations and enhance the management of their centers. These tools include POS system, intranet system, designated website and other computer equipment and software tailored to the needs of Hand & Stone franchisees.
Hand & Stone does not specify any franchisee requirements regarding liquid assets or net worth.
Prior spa or massage industry experience is not required. Hand & Stone is looking for business-minded, mission-driven owners with strong leadership and management backgrounds. Ideal candidates have experience in sales or management, solid business acumen and the ability to motivate a team, make marketing and operational decisions and serve as the face of the spa in their community.
Hand & Stone expects franchisees to be hands-on owners who lead their teams, make marketing decisions, handle day-to-day operations and finances, and serve as the face of the spa in their community. The brand does not clearly state whether semi-absentee ownership is supported, so candidates who want a limited role would need to clarify that directly with the franchise team.
The franchisor does not offer direct or indirect financing, nor does it guarantee franchisee notes, leases or other obligations.
“I’ve been with the brand for almost 10 years now. We started with one spa and now we have 15 spas. I love the brand — way too much. I came across a lot of concepts and Hand & Stone was one of them. I came to the Discovery Day and fell in love with every speaker. The big question is why I diversified into Hand & Stone. I count myself beyond lucky that Hand & Stone is what I chose. I thank God I did not go with any other brand. And the future is phenomenal.”
- Sumit Bansal, Multi-Unit Operator — Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin
“We have six current locations. I would recommend Hand & Stone because of the strength of the franchisor first and foremost. That is absolutely critical in your search for the right franchise partner. Beyond that, it’s the community that Hand & Stone has fostered. We work together collectively as a group of franchisees and that really helps all of us raise the bar and build the expectations as well as the profitability for our business.”
- Elizabeth Whitby, Multi-Unit Operator — Florida
The U.S. spa sector continues to demonstrate steady growth as consumers place greater emphasis on wellness, self-care and stress reduction. Industry revenue reached $23.5 billion in 2025, up 4.2% year over year, while spa visits climbed to 191 million and the number of spa locations increased to more than 22,000 nationwide. Revenue per visit also rose to approximately $123, reflecting consumers’ willingness to spend more on wellness experiences. The broader outlook remains favorable as demand expands beyond traditional massage and skincare services into recovery, longevity, preventive wellness and personalized treatments. For operators, the combination of rising guest traffic, higher spending per visit and sustained consumer interest in wellness creates a strong foundation for continued growth.
Hand & Stone stands out in an increasingly crowded spa space by offering affordable, accessible luxury and by emphasizing the equal importance of high-quality massage and advanced skin care services in a franchised setting.
In terms of competition, Hand & Stone faces several notable players in the spa sector, including Massage Envy, MassageLuXe, Elements Massage, The Woodhouse Spa, Glosslab and Dermani Medspa. However, Hand & Stone’s unique focus on values, quality and diverse offerings set the chain apart in a crowded marketplace.
Embarking on a franchise journey with Hand & Stone involves a structured process designed to ensure mutual alignment and success. Here's a step-by-step outline from initial inquiry to final approval:
