HomeTeam Inspection Service, the leading home inspection franchise with over 200 territories nationwide, has launched a new office in the Southern Tier of New York, led by David Pennock. Pennock, who spent nearly three decades leading operations and facilities management for higher education institutions, brings a strong technical foundation to the role, along with a deep commitment to relationship-building.

“I’m a people person. I really like to interact with folks. I like to build relationships with people,” Pennock said. “So for me, these opportunities to do home inspections and interact with people are not just transactions. They’re opportunities to connect, build rapport and build those relationships.”

“We’re excited to welcome David to the system and bring HomeTeam’s services to the Southern Tier,” said Matt Cook, Director of Operations. “Our approach to home inspections is clear, communicative and non-alarmist, and David’s focus on people and relationships fits that well. He’ll be a valuable resource for the community.”

Transitioning From Higher Education to Business Ownership

Pennock entered the home inspection industry after a long career with The Sage Colleges, Syracuse University, and most recently Cornell University, where he focused on facilities management and operations.

At Syracuse University, Pennock managed facilities and operations for two major student centers. Later, at Cornell University, he became immersed in the mechanics of commercial building systems by working directly with trade professionals.

“That job really provided a lot because that got me into the nitty-gritty of a lot of systems,” Pennock said. “Heating and air conditioning, plumbing, all those things… That really helped me get a better understanding of all those things kind of on a high level, but I always dug in with the trades folks that are working and would ask questions. I would spend as much time as I could with those folks.”

While he enjoyed the people and impact he had in these roles, Pennock began seeking something that could provide him both a bit more flexibility and some upward mobility.

Coincidentally, he was connected with a career coach who later connected him with a franchise advisor. As Pennock explored the options, he narrowed his list to three brands and ultimately chose HomeTeam because it meshes well with his previous professional experience.

“When it came right down to it, HomeTeam tied into the kinds of things I had done in my career. It seemed like a natural connection,” he said.

After finalizing his agreement with HomeTeam, Pennock balanced onboarding, training and state licensing requirements as he continued to work full-time. While the process required commitment and perseverance, he successfully launched his business in early July and has fully transitioned out of higher education.

A Relationship-Driven Asset for Southern Tier Buyers and Real Estate Agents

As Pennock begins building up his local presence, he is eager to meet the community’s need for professional, dependable home inspectors. While his business will handle the technical side of home inspections by evaluating structural and physical systems for prospective homebuyers, Pennock also aims to deliver on the slightly less tangible need he has identified in the area: a trusted resource to help guide buyers through pivotal life experiences.

“The HomeTeam model — operating with an actual team — is something that will be great for the community,” Pennock said. “For me, being able to provide these folks with concise, clear and timely inspection reports and the opportunity to be a resource for them is so meaningful. I look forward to being able to help people and see the immediate impact of my work.”

Beyond his technical expertise, Pennock firmly believes his best asset is his ability to truly connect with people.

“Relationships make the world go round,” he said. “When I told my colleagues at Cornell about HomeTeam, they immediately told me how good I would be at it because of how good I am with people. That was really reassuring, and that’s the same focus I aim to bring to every client and real estate agent I work with.”
