My son started working with us after college in Arizona. Joe oversees the operational side of the business, handling inventory, equipment and managing drivers, while Patty takes care of payroll, HR, marketing and bookkeeping. Joe Jr. focuses on business development, sales and customer relations. Despite their individual responsibilities, the Caradonnas work as a cohesive unit. “We all have responsibilities, but we all answer the phone, interact with customers and help each other,” Joe said. “We know how to do everything just in case one of us is busy.”One of the major benefits of running a family-owned franchise is the extra time spent together. Unlike other business models, franchising gives families the ability to share both work and life experiences. “You spend most of your time at work, and when you are a family working together, you just naturally spend more time together,” said Joe. “When a driver is out sick or on vacation, my son and I run the route together, so we spend that time together. Every working hour is a chance to spend time together.”While working with family can strengthen relationships, it also presents its own challenges. Joe admits that the Caradonnas can be an opinionated bunch, and disagreements do arise. “We are an opinionated family, and often, that can lead to us butting heads on how to navigate our paper shredding franchise,” he said. “You love your family, and there is a lot of emotion when speaking with them. When you work with family, you have a history, and you have to approach tough situations with the idea that you aren’t just talking with anyone but someone you love.”To maintain a healthy work-life balance, the Caradonnas have developed strategies to ensure work issues don’t spill into their personal lives. “You separate work and home life,” said Joe. “We always work together, so we try to give each other some space when work is over. We let each other have their own thing, and personal family time is always scheduled. With my wife, we learned that we don’t discuss work when we clock out. You need to take time to enjoy yourself and your family without the business.”Franchising also offers flexibility, but Joe emphasizes that this flexibility comes from working with family, not necessarily from the business model itself. “This is a hands-on franchise, and that is what we like about it,” he said. “We look at ProShred Arizona like we would any other business we would own; our time is spent working on the business, and the flexibility to spend time with family comes from our family working in the business. The resources a franchisor provides are a tool to help grow the business, not a tool to spend less time working.”For families considering working together in a franchise, Joe advises open communication and clear role definitions. “Sit down with them and really go over the pros and cons of a job, and establish a chain of command,” he said. “When you work with family, everyone wants to be a general, and no one wants to be a soldier. Family members need to know where they stand with the business and be accepting of that role. Family always comes first, and if the way you operate your business will negatively affect the way you interact personally, then it is best to avoid working with a family member. If you share the same vision, it is a rewarding experience.”Through years of experience, Joe has learned that running a franchise with family offers benefits that go beyond financial success. At its core, the trust and shared values that come with working together as a family strengthen not just the business, but the family itself. “A big benefit of working with your family is you have already established trust,” he said. “I trust my wife and my son to do a job more than someone I’d just hire for a position.
