Layne’s Chicken Fingers, a mainstay in College Station, Texas, is preparing for a milestone moment: the relocation and complete transformation of its second restaurant in the community. The Wellborn Road location, which opened over 20 years ago, is set to move just across the parking lot, taking over a corner lot and unveiling Layne’s newest prototype.

“This is a big moment for us,” said CEO Garrett Reed. “That Wellborn location is a major part of our history. It has been feeding College Station for over two decades. But after 22 years, we wanted to give it new life. We knew there was no better way to do this than with a small shift that would boost our visibility and allow us to bring an even better experience to our loyal guests.”

The new space will feature Layne’s sleek, modern prototype, which was carefully developed to offer guests a great, aesthetically pleasing experience while further streamlining operations and bringing even more efficiency to the process.

“All of our new markets are getting the new prototype, and we wanted to make sure that College Station, our home, got that same experience,” Reed said. “It’s also cool to know that the original Layne’s is just down the road. Everyone can see who we were when we started and where we’re going next.”

When the leadership team acquired the College Station market from the original owner, Mike Garratt, they knew they wanted to further develop the area. The intention was always to add more locations and elevate and modernize existing ones while maintaining the integrity and character of the original.

“From the beginning, we knew we wanted to bring the market in line with the Layne’s brand of today,” Reed said. “We just didn’t know exactly how or when that would happen. Then, this space became available. It was the perfect fit.”

The original location, just two miles down the road, will remain untouched, serving as a Layne’s museum of sorts as it continues to serve guests. At over 50 years old, that building is somewhat of a local landmark and remains an important part of the Layne’s story.

“That location is sacred to us,” Reed said. “It’s where the story began. So, while Wellborn gets a fresh start, the OG will stay exactly how it is — a living reminder of where we came from.”

The new Wellborn location is set to open mid-2026. And for long-time fans and newcomers alike, the juxtaposition will offer a chance to experience the Layne’s story right there in College Station.

“You’ll be able to visit the original location on Walton Drive, then head over and see what’s next on Wellborn,” Reed said.
