WHY I BOUGHT
After owning his location in Riverside, CA for not even a full year, Josh Zeidman has already created lasting relationships with businesses in his community.
Complete marketing service provider with nearly 1,000 locations Minuteman Press gives franchisees the opportunity to tap into the essential print and communications market, while benefiting from a wide variety of revenue streams, a capped royalty structure, regionalized support and a Monday to Friday work schedule. One of those franchisees is Josh Zeidman, who purchased his Minuteman Press franchise in Riverside, California just last year.
After spending five years working for startups as a director of operations, Zeidman decided he wanted to be his own business owner. Around the same time, the previous owner of the Riverside Minuteman Press location was retiring. In August of 2022, Zeidman became the new owner of the business.
“I was attracted to Minuteman for their presence — they have a great national reputation,” he said. “I've never been in printing before, so I wanted to make sure I worked with a brand that offered strong corporate support. And that’s what I got.”
How Zeidman Feels Supported
When the father-and-son duo of Roy and Bob Titus decided to start Minuteman Press in 1973, the mission was to disrupt the printing industry and tap into a massive need. Today, that mission still stands strong. Because every business uses some form of marketing material, the potential for clients in every community is endless.
“I've only been doing this for seven months, but we already have so many new customers,” said Zeidman. “At least once a month, we get phone calls from customers who have had positive experiences with Minuteman Press in the past and want to work with us. The good reputation Minuteman has developed goes a long way.”
Notably, franchisees benefit from a wide variety of products and services offered by the company that are not seasonal or subject to trends, do not require much inventory and are not expensive to produce. And because clients typically buy more than one type of product or service, there is a high percentage of repeat business.
“Because of the versatility of our industry, we are able to meet the need for high-demand items that businesses need and use to operate and grow,” said Nick Titus, President of Minuteman Press. “As times change, we are able to quickly adapt and add new products and services.”
Full-service centers provide signs and posters, floor and window decals, banners and booth displays for local events, custom branded apparel, promotional items and more. Direct mail campaign opportunities allow franchisees to offer clients a way to get the word out about their products and services, business updates and special offers.
Franchisees also enjoy a capped royalty structure that gives them the opportunity to receive far more in value than they pay in royalties. For eligible owners, royalties are 6% of gross monthly sales and capped at a reasonable monthly sales level, meaning they do not pay any royalties on sales above that level.
Zeidman also noted how impressed he has been from the beginning with the support offered by Minuteman Press. The brand provides user-friendly business management, pricing and marketing software, and a supportive network of over 25 regional support teams with years of experience. This structure is designed to allow owners to focus their efforts on managing and marketing their business, not doing the production work.
“The support from my local RVP Dan Byers (Southern California) and the entire Minuteman team across the board has really helped me learn the industry and run this business,” said Zeidman. “I have found that I love the printing industry and being a Minuteman Press franchise owner allows me the opportunity to service my customers and impact their businesses in valuable ways.”
Why Riverside Is an Excellent Fit for the Brand
One of the biggest ways Minuteman Press sets itself apart is through its connections with the community. Print and communications is an essential industry, with the global printing market being valued at $364 billion in 2022, and Minuteman Press franchises support local businesses of all shapes and sizes.
Riverside, Zeidman says, is full of independent businesses, which has made it a great market for the brand to operate in. “We want to be an active part of our community,” said the franchisee. “There’s four of us here and we all live in the Riverside area. It's important for us to partner with people and support them.”
One of the ways Zeidman is getting involved is through sponsoring a local baseball team that a client’s son is a part of. The business is also becoming a member of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce.
“That will definitely give us a chance to be more involved with the city and other businesses,” Zeidman added. “We're branching out into finding more ways to partner with the people in our community. There’s plenty of opportunities.”
A Focus on Great Customer Service
By providing the marketing tools and services that businesses of all kinds need for their everyday operations, Minuteman Press franchisees have found success for 50 years. For Zeidman, that starts with customer service.
“Success is building relationships with our customers and growing those relationships through producing a great quality product and delivering on great customer service,” he said. “Success is having a happy team. All three team members that were a part of the business with the prior owner stayed on. And I'm super excited about that. We're having fun. We're learning new things.”
Looking ahead, Zeidman is looking forward to purchasing new equipment and growing the capabilities of his business. He noted that he will continue to expand operations based on what customers are looking for and determining how he can best serve them, as well as his employees.
“My team enjoys what they do and our customers feel that,” said Zeidman. “It’s an exciting time to be a part of Minuteman Press.”
