In just a few short years, the husband-and-wife team has grown their&nbsp;<a href="https://mistersparkyfranchise.com/">Mister Sparky Electric franchise</a> into a thriving operation with roughly 25 employees, all while redefining what it means to be an electrician in their community.Lee began as a journeyman electrician before becoming an instructor in the field, a role that ultimately sparked a passion for teaching. That path led him to earn a master’s degree in education. Kristen, meanwhile, spent her career in nursing — a profession she loved, but one that was both demanding and exhausting.“I was having a rough day at work, and Lee came to meet me at lunch and told me that he was considering this franchise,” she said. “That started our conversations with the brand.”<h2>Finding a Business and a Clear Path Forward</h2>The Lewises had long recognized a need for reliable electrical services in their area. In fact, they had joked about starting their own electrical business before. But the reality of running a company felt overwhelming.“We were not businesspeople, so we had no idea how to run a business,” Kristen said. “That was what was so appealing about the franchise. They’re building meaningful careers, supporting their families and delivering a high level of service to our community.”Kristen pointed to emergency response efforts, including providing electrical services during Hurricane Helene last year, as some of the most meaningful moments of their journey.“That is incredibly rewarding,” she said. “I love coming to work every day.”<h2>Redefining What It Means to Be an Electrician</h2>Under the Lewises’ joint leadership, the business has become known for more than just technical expertise. “We have redefined our industry to the point where we are so much more than what people expect when they hire an electrician,” Kristen said.At the heart of that shift is pride in the trade, in the team, and in the work itself. “We’ve created a place where we really focus on the pride of being an electrician,” she said. “This is what you chose to do because this is what you are good at.”Looking ahead, growth remains a key focus. “We are very growth-driven here. We always want to grow,” Kristen said. “My goal is to continue replicating exactly what we have here all over the East Coast. Our work matters. Kristen and Lee Lewis, a husband-and-wife team in West Virginia, are turning their entrepreneurial passion into a rapidly expanding, mission-driven business that is elevating the electrical trade.

<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/bryan-martinez-ab4864127/">Bryan Martinez</a> thought he would retire from the U.S. Air Force. Instead, an injury in Afghanistan forced him to rebuild his life from the ground up and eventually led him to a new mission: helping fellow veterans succeed in the civilian workforce. His story was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sanantoniomag.com/helping-vets-in-the-workforce/">recently highlighted in San Antonio Magazine</a>.Martinez served more than five years as a security forces member and deployed twice to Bagram Air Base in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. On his second deployment in 2012, his squad was patrolling outside the base in an armored personnel carrier when the ground gave way beneath the vehicle. He rolled into a 6-foot ditch, tearing the rotator cuffs in both shoulders and injuring his ACL, repeating an injury from his high school football days. When his head slammed against the truck’s bulletproof glass, he suffered a traumatic brain injury.After follow-up medical care in Germany, Martinez was deemed nondeployable and medically discharged at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene. “I couldn’t finish my duty I signed up to do,” Martinez, 38, said. “That’s ultimately how my career ended.”Back in San Antonio, Martinez was starting over. He kept up with appointments to manage PTSD and tried to figure out what life looked like outside the military. After a career-ending injury, Air Force veteran Bryan Martinez found stability in the trades. Now he helps other vets turn military skills into civilian careers.

Before transitioning to&nbsp;<a href="https://mistersparkyfranchise.com/">Mister Sparky Electric</a>, the consumer electrical services franchise, Dennis Conrade was a second-generation electrician working primarily in commercial construction in Arkansas. However, after decades of running a successful operation, Dennis and his wife,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/elisa-conrade-82790270/">Elisa</a>, hit a ceiling. No amount of hard work could overcome the limits of Dennis’ availability. In addition to an opportunity to scale, the Conrades were also looking for a way to turn a profitable trade into a true asset and something that could eventually become transferable.“Without Dennis, that business didn’t work,” Elisa said. “It wasn’t a true business in the sense that this service business is. There was no room for growth other than having a bigger contract any given year.”In 2008, the Conrades received a piece of direct mail inviting them to learn how to make money in the electrical business. Given the economic instability of that year, they were intrigued. After attending an informational session, Dennis was sold. At this time, the&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/mister-sparky-electric/info">Mister Sparky Electric</a> territory near them wasn’t available, but they were able to tap into the systems and resources offered by the franchisor to begin scaling their business.“He could see that would be the future of our business,” Elisa said.In 2012, the territory issue was resolved, and the pair invested in a Mister Sparky Electric franchise, converting their existing business to align with the Mister Sparky brand identity. While they adopted the brand in 2012, the Conrades made the full transition from commercial construction to a pure service and repair model by 2018.Once the switch was complete, they didn’t look back. The move to the recurring service model helped stabilize revenue, and it opened doors for the entire family to be involved. Daughters&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/erica-campbell-809b19125/">Erica Campbell</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-conrade/">Erin Conrade</a> are both now key members of the family business, which would not have been possible in the heavily commercial space that was largely driven by Dennis.<h2>Balancing Strengths in a Family-Run Franchise</h2>Integrating four family members into a business dynamic took careful consideration and a recognition of one another’s skills for the Conrades, and it remains a balancing act to support both the family business and non-work family time.“That is a very difficult thing to do,” Elisa said. “Anyone who runs a small business will attest that you don’t have the work-life balance that you would have with other employment opportunities. But we do manage to make it work. All four of us have very different strengths and weaknesses, and we’ve tried to play on those as we’ve grown.”Dennis remains the technical anchor, managing the electrical standards and field operations, supporting and complementing Elisa and Erica’s back-office management.“Dennis knows everything that could happen, electrical-wise, in the home,” Elisa said. “He knows when something is awry with our guys in the field, materials are out of whack and that sort of thing.”Supporting all of this, Erin has carved out a unique place for herself in the company, driving culture and people.“Erin is our free spirit and visionary,” Elisa said. “She’s constantly working on all of the rest of us regarding mindset, helping us stay focused and positive about the future. She does all of our training, and she’s our chief people officer.”<h2>The Local Advantage of a Family-Owned Franchise</h2>In Little Rock, Elisa says the family dynamic offers a distinct competitive edge. For homeowners, inviting a service provider to work in or on their home is a big leap, and it requires deep trust. The Conrades have leveraged their reputation as a family-owned business to build additional trust in their market.“There may be some markets where this isn’t the case, but we’re in a small market in the South. I do think that the family business reputation helps,” Elisa said. “A lot of times, that’s what we try to make sure our customers understand. We’re not a big corporate company. For Elisa and Dennis, the franchise also serves as something tangible that can be passed down through generations.“We are trying to build a legacy here in central Arkansas,” Elisa said. “We have four grandkids, and they’re growing up very fast.
