Nation’s Restaurant News: Alexander Acosta Nominated as Labor Secretary

Puzder withdraws and President Trump nominates his first Latino cabinet member.

After restaurant CEO Andy Puzder withdrew as the nominee for labor secretary, President Donald Trump named a new nominee on Thursday. According to a recent Nation’s Restaurant News article, law school dean Alexander Acosta who served on the National Labor Relations Board in 2002 and 2003 is the first Latino nominated to Trump’s cabinet.

International Franchise Association senior vice president of communications and public affairs Matthew Haller thinks that Acosta will have a much easier time getting Senate confirmation and said the IFA was impressed with his background. Though the IFA was saddened to hear about Puzder’s withdrawal.

“We think this is a missed opportunity to put someone with business knowledge in the position,” he said.

In the coming days, Acosta will receive a thorough vetting on labor and employee issues in order to uphold the Labor Department’s mission.
