Papa John's founder John Schnatter is stepping down from his role as Chairman of the Board. According to a recent article in The New York Times, Schnatter's decision follows his use of a racial slur during a conference call in May. Independent directors will begin their search for a new executive to fill the role.

“Regardless of the context, I apologize. Simply stated, racism has no place in our society,” said Schnatter.

This incident in May was not his first offense. In November, Schnatter made headlines with his commentary surrounding the National Football League. His comments were directed at the organization's approach toward players who kneeled during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racism.  
 
In addition to resigning from his position at Papa John's, he has stepped down from his role on the Board of Trustees for the University of Louisville.
