After 30 years in San Diego, Chris and Andrea Brown moved to Wisconsin and purchased an existing business with Right at Home, the leading 750-plus-unit in-home care franchise, in March 2022 to be closer to family. Today, they serve seniors and adults with disabilities across Brown, Winnebago, Outagamie, and Calumet counties from locations in Appleton and De Pere.

“We wanted a way to give back to the community we lived in,” Chris said. “We also knew we wanted to work with people who cared about others in the way we did — those who believed in that concept of ‘service above self.’”

Now, Right at Home is looking to build on the Browns’ success and expand into the nearby Fond du Lac and Oshkosh markets.

Finding the Right Business in the Right Place

Caregiving had always been an interest for the Browns. Andrea worked in a nursing home in high school and later pursued a nursing degree, while Chris initially considered medical school before spending 15 years as a Chief Marketing Officer. He later joined Andrea in her real estate consulting business.

When they began looking for a new business opportunity, they wanted something that would allow them to work directly with people and serve their community. While talking with a member of the Right at Home team, they learned about an unexpected resale in Appleton, where their daughter and parents lived.

“We recognize how special Right at Home is here,” Chris said. “This location has annual, consecutive awards for ‘Leader in Experience,’ ‘Provider of Choice,’ and ‘Employer of Choice’ in the Best of Home Care awards since 2018. We have a fantastic staff in place that we inherited, who are great care managers, so there is already a great backbone to this business.”

The Wisconsin Right at Home operation had also earned the Caring Superstar Award for five consecutive years and was named a Top Employer and Top Provider for four years before the Browns took ownership.

Meeting a Growing Need for Care

The Browns understand the need for senior care personally. Their own parents are in their 80s and 90s, and they have seen that helping older adults remain independent often requires more than the occasional trip to the doctor.

“A lot of times it is companionship care,” Chris said. “If someone has lost a spouse or a close friend, there is a great need for emotional support. With adult children often having built lives in other parts of the country, these aging seniors need personal care. They need someone to run errands and help with personal hygiene. Most people don’t want to go to nursing homes.”

Chris said the need for nonmedical care continues to grow as more seniors look to remain in their homes. The Browns were also drawn to the franchise’s established reputation in the Fox Cities and the support Right at Home provides to owners and caregivers, including ongoing training.

Right at Home Targets Fond du Lac and Oshkosh

Right at Home now sees an opportunity to serve more Wisconsin families by developing one available territory in the Fond du Lac and Oshkosh market, including Oshkosh, Manawa, King, and Clintonville. The target market includes 60,433 residents age 65 and older, including 6,905 age 85 and older. Average household income is $93,688, while average net worth is $509,877.

Age 65 is a key milestone where many people begin needing additional help around the home to stay safe and healthy, and that need only grows as people age. Markets like Fond du Lac and Oshkosh, where household incomes are high, represent a strong opportunity for a model like Right at Home, as more households may have the financial resources to invest in this type of care for themselves or their loved ones.

“Wisconsin has been an outstanding market for Right at Home, and we are proud of the impact our franchise owners have made in the lives of local families,” said Jen Chaney, Senior Vice President of Franchise Development & Sales at Right at Home. “As demand for care continues to grow, we see an opportunity to bring that same level of service and support to even more communities across the state.”

Right at Home offers in-home companionship, personal care, and assistance to seniors and adults with disabilities who want to continue living independently. With its global office in Omaha, Nebraska, the brand has more than 750 franchise locations in the U.S. and five other countries. Local offices are independently owned and operated and directly employ and supervise caregivers who are screened, trained, and bonded/insured before entering a client’s home.

The need for these services continues to grow as the population ages. The U.S. population aged 65 and older has grown from 12.4% in 2004 to 18% in 2024, reaching over 61 million total people, and 70% of adults who reach 65 are expected to need long-term services and supports at some point in their lives. Right at Home’s mission is to improve the quality of life for those it serves through the right people, services, and approach.

For the Browns, the combination of business ownership and demand for these services is exactly what drew them to Right at Home. It gave them an opportunity to use their business experience in a way that directly benefits caregivers, clients, and their families.

“This specific opportunity checked all the boxes because now we get to employ a whole team of caregivers who want to be a blessing to others, and in doing so, bring people a better quality of life,” Chris said. “That is what energizes us.”
