A Texas-based respiratory therapist, Dudeczka transitioned from the corporate side to launch her own Seniors Helping Seniors® franchise in Belton, Texas, just outside Austin.&nbsp;Like many seniors experiencing health issues, Dudeczka’s mother hoped to remain in her own home, maintaining dignity while tackling life as independently as possible.&nbsp;“It was personal. My mom was not able to communicate. But we knew she wanted to be at home instead of going into a skilled nursing facility,” Dudeczka said. “So, my brother and I put our heads together to try and figure out what we could do.”This personal search led her to realize the Belton community needed a trusted, in-home option grounded in empathy and experience.“I feel like this is something needed in all communities,” Dudeczka said. “It helps maintain the dignity of keeping individuals in their own homes. I see so much depression among the elderly, and even just having companionship with other seniors is remarkable. That’s what brought me here.”Dudeczka’s story highlights the importance of delivering empathetic senior care. Here’s what she had to say:1851 Franchise: How would you frame your personal story?Tammy Dudeczka: My journey was very personal. My mom couldn’t communicate, but we knew she wanted to stay at home rather than move into a skilled nursing facility. My brother and I began brainstorming ways to make that possible. Around the same time, I was exploring new career opportunities, and this opportunity came along—it was the perfect fit.With the aging of the baby boomer generation, I truly believe this kind of support is needed in every community. It allows seniors to maintain their dignity by staying in their own homes. I’ve also seen how loneliness and depression affect older adults, and even just having companionship with peers can make a remarkable difference. That’s what drew me to this work.1851: What did you do before franchising and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Dudeczka: I’ve been in health care for more than 30 years and spent a lot of that time on the corporate side. I began my career as a respiratory therapist in 1992 and subsequently transitioned into management and administration.&nbsp;The corporate world was tough. I was working many hours, and it stopped being about the patients; it became more about the bottom line. I wanted to do something that would make a difference, something more meaningful, and I knew franchising could provide that opportunity.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Dudeczka: Honestly, I thought of franchises as things like McDonald’s or other fast-food chains. I didn’t want anything like that. I needed something that really touched my heart, that meant something, and that gave back to the community.That’s what Seniors Helping Seniors® is. It’s very family-based. When you meet the owners, they’re the sweetest, most loving, compassionate, family-oriented people. The first time I met them, we hugged. This is what a great community is: people helping take care of each other.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Dudeczka: The people getting involved in this business aren’t doing it just for profit. Yes, it’s a business, but we all care deeply for people and for our communities. We want to help one another. And we know that when our time comes, we want the same compassion from others.It’s a feel-good kind of business. Everyone who has joined this organization feels the same way. The company is very intentional about choosing the right franchise owners, people who genuinely want to do good, not just those who can pay a fee. That’s what’s awesome about it.1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?Dudeczka: I’ve worked in this area for 17 years, so I know some of the communities where I can really make an impact. In my own community, I’ve helped transport a few elderly women. This is a great way to continue giving back to the local community.I definitely want to grow. I believe in this so much that I’ve even looked into purchasing the territory next to mine, where a lot of my family lives. That would benefit them in the long run too.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Dudeczka: It’s a lot of long hours and hard work, but if you have the compassion and heart for it, it’s worth it. Reach out to other franchise members- they’ve all helped me. And I’d be happy to help anyone just getting started.
