After decades spent building a successful network of car dealerships in West Texas, they wanted their next chapter to mean something — to make a lasting difference in people’s lives. That desire led them to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sylvanfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=sylvan-learning-abilene-25th-anniversary-2729109" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Sylvan Learning</a>, a national education franchise focused on personalized tutoring for students in reading, math, writing, test prep and more.“<a href="https://1851franchise.com/sylvanlearning/info">Sylvan</a> marks the second chapter of our careers,” said Mike. “Cindy and I spent 25 years in the automobile business. Toward the end, we were partners with two others and owned 10 new car franchises in the Abilene area. After we sold out, we were trying to figure out what was next. We wanted to pursue something that would have more of an impact on people's lives than selling cars.”That shift began when Mike was invited to sit on a board for a local businessman, helping evaluate potential ventures for his children. One of the proposals brought forward was a pair of Sylvan Learning centers in Fort Worth. Both are preparing to take over operations as Mike and Cindy gradually step into retirement.“In the early days, we did everything — cleaned the office, cleaned the bathrooms,” said Cindy. “Matthew was our janitor in college. He was a baseball player, so sometimes he’d do it at midnight after games. Michael helped with the books before everything was on iPads.”They’ve all carried that work ethic forward. But more importantly, they’ve kept the focus on personal impact. That commitment has made their centers not only successful businesses, but trusted educational hubs that have changed the lives of countless local students.“I remember one student in particular — a young girl in ninth grade reading at about a third-grade level,” said Mike. “Her mom brought her in; she was in a rough spot — she’d attempted suicide twice and was just discouraged. We were able to help her through the program. She ended up graduating high school with a real diploma. That’s one story, but honestly, there are countless others.”For Matthew, one student and her family became more than just clients — they became lifelong friends.“One of the most memorable families I’ve worked with is the Patels in Lubbock,” he said. “Their daughter, Jilpa, started with us in second grade. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class, went to Texas Tech on a full ride and got into medical school. I wrote her recommendation letter. She and her family became really close friends — they came to my wedding, gave gifts when our kids were born. We still text each other photos of our kids.”That kind of connection, Cindy adds, wasn’t one-sided.“The mom would call me during school conferences and put me on the phone,” she said. “She felt like Matthew was one of her own. She even wanted to take him on vacation with their family. One time when he was sick, she brought him medicine and food. That kind of relationship means a lot.”A Proven System, When Done RightThe Sullivans have seen plenty of trends come and go in education, but their centers have remained successful by sticking to the model — and doing it with excellence.“It’s simple: if it’s done the right way, Sylvan works,” said Mike. “A lot of other programs are band-aid solutions. Sylvan gets to the root of the problem and fixes it. It’s a very positive, encouraging environment. Kids are rewarded through a token system, and that motivates them. Cindy runs the Sylvan Store — it's the best in the country, in my opinion.”Matthew emphasizes that the team’s follow-through has been just as important as the curriculum.“If we say we’re going to do something for a family, we do it,” he said. “If something goes wrong, we take responsibility and fix it. That kind of integrity builds long-term trust.”Their commitment to doing the right thing — even when no one is watching — is a lesson that’s been passed down through the family, along with a sense of financial responsibility that’s helped the business thrive through good times and bad.“We got out of debt as quickly as we could,” Mike said. “We underpaid ourselves in the beginning to make that happen. That financial discipline gave us the flexibility to weather tough seasons. Cindy deserves the credit for that. She managed our resources wisely.”Looking Ahead Without Rushing AheadAs the 25th anniversary milestone approaches, there won’t be a big public celebration. Mike said they will likely keep it simple.“Cindy and I will probably go to Taco Bueno and watch a movie — that’s how she likes to celebrate,” he said. “Honestly, it’s just another day. It’s nice to hit a milestone, but the real reward is in the work itself.”Looking ahead, the next chapter belongs to Matthew and Michael — but they’re not in a hurry.“Our approach is, ‘As quick as we can, as slow as we must,’” said Michael. “Matthew and I would like to expand, but right now, our families need us. We both have young kids. Our priorities are faith, family, then work. We’re not going to flip that order right now.”After 25 years, the Sullivans remain proud of the lives they’ve touched, the relationships they’ve built and the business they’ve grown — together.“We believe in the product,” Mike said. “In the car business, there were brands I loved and others I didn’t. That's how I live my life: doing the best I can at whatever I put my hands to.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Cosentino:&nbsp;I spent nearly 10 years in my career as an executive assistant and project manager, but unfortunately, layoffs impacted my position at the end of 2024.Following that, the job search felt different from any other time. I looked at my skill set and knew my experience would translate well into business ownership. I realized this was an opportune time to bet on myself.1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand?
