In response to the devastating fires that displaced families and disrupted local schools, Sylvan Learning of Pasadena is stepping up to help affected students get back on track academically, Pasadena Weekly recently reported. The center is offering one month of free tutoring — eight personalized sessions — to students impacted by the crisis, with ongoing discounts available after the first month.
“It was so sudden, so tragic,” said Fabio Marquez, Sylvan Learning’s regional director. “We felt that we needed to do something, and we have that center there to provide the support.”
Sylvan Learning worked directly with Pasadena Unified School District to identify students in need — including those from Eliot Middle School, which lost part of its building to the fire — and is now providing individualized tutoring in core subjects like math, reading, writing, science and foreign languages, based on each student’s initial assessment.
While many families are referred through their schools, any affected family can contact Sylvan Learning of Pasadena to check eligibility. The center’s credentialed tutors use a blend of traditional instruction and technology to meet students where they are — academically and developmentally.
Marquez notes that many children are still recovering from educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Sylvan Learning aims to close foundational gaps while also supporting students’ self-esteem and confidence. Elementary students, particularly those in kindergarten through fifth grade, are expected to benefit the most from these services.
Tutoring is offered for grades K–12, and families can choose to attend a Sylvan Learning location of their choice, although Pasadena remains the primary hub for fire-relief efforts.
