Air Force veteran Dan Schultz opened a franchise with The Cleaning Authority — the residential housecleaning brand with over 250 locations across the United States and Canada — about six months ago after retiring from a 21-year military career, Omaha Daily Record recently reported. He could have moved into defense or international work, but he wanted something local where he could lead a team and run his own business.
Schultz was drawn to The Cleaning Authority’s structured Detail-Clean-Rotation approach — a repeatable checklist that supports training, consistency and clear expectations for customers — rather than a vague promise of “clean.”
"The thing that sets us apart from other cleaning businesses is the detailed clean rotation system," Schultz said. “Instead of cleaning the whole house detailed every time, what we do is we detail one area every time, but do a general clean of the whole house. A lot of the things that cleaners clean, they don't need to be cleaned every two weeks. At least in the same way.”
He also found the brand’s training and support helpful as he learned how to run the business. After years of managing people, coordinating schedules and adapting to new situations in the Air Force, the franchise setup felt familiar.
Before franchising, Schultz worked in linguistics, reconnaissance and electronic warfare, with deployments to Europe and the Middle East. When a planned foreign-affairs assignment fell through at the end of his career, he started looking for something new that still used his leadership skills.
Today, Schultz manages two dedicated teams and hopes to add a third soon. Most of his employees are younger, so he keeps snacks, drinks and breakfast items available to help create a supportive environment. He says small things like that matter to morale.
He knows that leads will go up and down, but he focuses on what he can control — strong cleaning, good service and steady improvement as the business grows. For Schultz, his franchise with The Cleaning Authority has become a practical and meaningful second career.
