Corporate-owned locations play an important role in helping franchise systems improve operations, test new processes and share best practices with franchise owners at United Water Restoration Group (UWRG), a 50-plus-location restoration franchise. That collaboration was recognized this year when corporate operators Ray Faris and David Kays were named UWRG’s Operators of the Year.

"It was a surprising honor," Kays said. “I was really excited to get it and very proud of my team. We worked very hard over the past year to improve in a lot of different areas with paperwork, documentation and trying to make our signing ratios higher.”

While Faris and Kays are corporate employees rather than franchise owners, their day-to-day responsibilities directly support the franchise system. That puts them in a position to help shape the systems and processes used throughout the UWRG network.

"The big thing is keeping an open line of communication," Faris said. "Whether it be difficulties in franchises, difficulties in corporate, and just bouncing ideas back and forth to ultimately make the whole brand a successful brand."

Corporate Locations Help Refine Operations

Corporate locations give UWRG an opportunity to test new processes before they are introduced throughout the franchise system. Rather than asking franchise owners to experiment with new ideas on their own, corporate teams can first determine what works, identify potential challenges and make adjustments before sharing recommendations across the network.

"We talk about daily struggles and daily issues," Faris said. “We'll build a process and try to run it in one office to see if it works. If it does work, then we pass it along. Even if it doesn't, we still share it.”

Corporate teams also evaluate products that may improve field operations. Kays said his group researches new equipment, tests it in the field and shares successful solutions with franchise owners so they can benefit from the experience.

"We do a lot of research on the products and then we try them out," Kays said. "If they work successfully, then we try to give it out to other people and show them what we're using, how it works and how it makes your job easier. There are a lot of new products that have been coming out lately that make our jobs a little bit easier."

Sharing Best Practices Across the Network

Communication between corporate staff and Franchise Owners creates opportunities for everyone to learn from one another. During the company's annual conference, franchise owners had the chance to speak to Kays and Faris about what was working well for them and vice versa.

"[The Franchise Owners] were asking me questions, picking my brain on what we do at corporate and what works for us," Faris said. “That open communication and letting them know what's successful for us means they can try it on their end to see if it works for them. Even the things they do help us as well. It's both sides helping each other out.”

Franchise owners benefit from learning proven processes, implementing successful ideas that have already been tested in corporate locations and adapting best practices to fit their own businesses. Exchanging ideas between corporate and franchise teams helps strengthen operations across the entire UWRG network.

Delivering a Consistent Customer Experience

Testing processes and sharing best practices ultimately helps create a more consistent customer experience throughout the UWRG system. Following the same operational standards across locations helps ensure customers receive the same level of service regardless of which office they contact.

"The goal is to keep one process across the board," Faris said. “You don't want one office doing things one way and another office doing something different. If they go to this franchise or that franchise, they're getting the same satisfaction.”

While corporate and franchised locations have different ownership structures, they operate with the same objective: delivering a consistent experience for customers while continually improving operations.
