The franchise industry provides veterans with a great opportunity to become small business owners and entrepreneurs. That&rsquo;s especially true in the case of Jason Maddux, who since opening his <a href="https://mosquitojoefranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=veterans-in-franchising-jason-maddux-of-mosquito-joe-2707044" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" style="text-decoration-line:none" target="_blank">Mosquito Joe</a> location a few months ago has become the number two performer in his region. He credits much of that success to the strong work ethic and dedication he learned while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years. 

Maddux was instantly drawn to the Mosquito Joe brand through his extensive research and the need for a pest and mosquito control company in his hometown in Alabama. 

1851 connected with Maddux to learn more about this chapter in his career.

1851: Why did you decide to join the military? 

Maddux: I joined the military to improve myself, become a better person and give back to this country. I was in the Marine Corps from April 2013 until April 2017. 

1851: What was the most valuable thing your military experience taught you? 

Maddux: It made me more disciplined and a harder worker. It also taught me to be a better person and I think my military experience has made me successful as a small business owner - I hold myself accountable. 

1851: How did your military service prepare you for franchising? 

Maddux: Mosquito Joe is great at laying everything out step by step. The military has made me such a disciplined person, and &nbsp;I knew I would be successful as a franchisee. I was disciplined in following the checklist and listening to the corporate team; I took no shortcuts. I completed the pest control licensing test - I finished it in 18 days when it typically takes six months. I did that by working as a security guard and studying at night, completing one lesson a day. 

1851: What about Mosquito Joe attracted you to the brand? 

Maddux: I liked the Mosquito Joe advertising and brand and there was a need for their services in my hometown. 

1851: What advice would you give to veterans who are looking to get into franchising? 

Maddux: I would tell them it would be a good idea and to play out the steps of becoming a franchisee like you would in the military. Stay self-disciplined and you won&rsquo;t run into any issues. 

1851: What does franchising mean to you?

Maddux: Franchising and Mosquito Joe are important parts of my life especially being a veteran. Listen to the corporate team and follow the system &mdash; they have your best interest at heart. 

1851: What would you like to achieve in franchising within the next 5 years? 

Maddux: I would like to see my brand grow and I&rsquo;d love to branch out and expand my territory. Down the line, I&rsquo;d maybe sign on to open a few more locations.
