If you're thinking about franchising, it's easy to get caught up in the numbers, like how much it costs to open or how much you might make. Although those numbers are important, there’s something else that’s just as important and often overlooked: brand culture.

Brand culture is the personality of the business. It affects how people treat each other, how decisions get made, how success is defined and more. For a first-time franchisee, understanding a brand’s culture can help you figure out whether you’ll actually enjoy working with the franchisor and whether you’ll feel supported as you grow.

Culture Starts at the Top

When you talk to a brand, pay attention to the tone coming from the leadership team. Do they speak with passion? Are they honest about challenges? Culture starts with leadership, and you’ll likely feel the effects of that culture every day as an owner.

If the leadership seems disconnected or only focused on profits, that may be a red flag. If they seem approachable and genuinely interested in helping their franchisees succeed, that’s a good sign.

Look Beyond the Marketing

Every brand will tell you they care about their franchisees. They’ll say they’re “like a family” or have a “collaborative environment.” That’s marketing. The real question is whether current franchisees feel the same way.

This is where validation comes in. When you talk to existing franchise owners, ask them about their relationship with corporate. Do they feel heard? Supported? Do they enjoy being part of the brand? You’ll learn more from those conversations than any website or sales pitch can tell you.

Culture Affects Day-to-Day Life

Think about your working style and values. Do you want structure and clear systems, or do you like having more flexibility? Do you want a franchisor that’s hands-on, or one that gives you more space? Culture shows up in how the brand handles training, communication, problem-solving and conflict.

A mismatch in culture will be frustrating and can lead to burnout or regret.

Trust Your Gut

Finally, trust your instincts. If something feels off in your conversations with the franchisor, pay attention to that. Culture isn’t always easy to define, but you can usually feel it. And when you're investing your time, money and energy into a business, you want to know that you’re joining a team that fits.
