The agreement, signed with The Philippines-based Viva International Food &amp; Restaurants, Inc. and facilitated through JNM Dining Concepts, Wing Zone&rsquo;s South Asia Master Franchise, based in Singapore, will result in the building of up to 50 new Wing Zone units across The Philippines over the next 10 years.

The signing continues strong international growth for the brand during the last year, and comes on the heels of a diversified development focus for the iconic American brand. When the U.S. economy began to buckle in 2008, Wing Zone Co-Founder and CEO Matt Friedman knew operational flexibility was essential to maintaining the brand&rsquo;s competitive edge in the increasingly crowded wing segment. Noting stronger economic markets globally, Friedman launched Wing Zone&rsquo;s aggressive international growth strategy. Today, the leading fast-casual restaurant franchise boasts more than 100 units open or in development across the U.S., and a strong international presence, including locations in Panama, Singapore, Malaysia and beyond, a footprint that will more than triple with this new signing in The Philippines.&nbsp;

The partnership will be driven through Viva Food, under the Viva Group of Companies, following discussions with Johnny Mayani, Managing Director of JNM Dining Concepts, who identified Viva as a strong area developer for the brand. After investing heavily in the entertainment industry, Viva Group of Companies Chairman and CEO Vicente &ldquo;Vic&rdquo; del Rosario, Jr., has made a new investment push into restaurants in his pursuit to become the heaviest hitter in the food industry in The Philippines. Viva International Food &amp; Restaurants also successfully operates Paper Moon Tokyo Cake Boutique and Caf&eacute; as well as Botejyu Authentic Japanese Restaurant chain, as franchisees. The company&rsquo;s newest agreement with Wing Zone puts them on track to potentially open up to 50 units over the next 10 years, with the initial development comprising 10 restaurants, the first of which is scheduled to open in early Q3 2017 in SM MEGAMALL in Manila. The developments will be facilitated through Wing Zone&rsquo;s South Asia headquarters and training center, JNM Dining Concepts, based in Singapore.

As Wing Zone&rsquo;s headquarters for the Asian region, the Singapore training center will provide supply chain management, vendor management, branding, and development strategy for the new Viva locations in The Philippines. Wing Zone franchisees across the region already benefit from the Singapore center&rsquo;s real-time support through training, marketing, and approval assistance, and the brand support team is eager to expand its impact through the new locations in The Philippines.&nbsp;

Wing Zone continues to push aggressive expansion plans in the U.S. as well, including recent openings and signings in Illinois and California. Abroad, the brand has also seen three recent store openings in Panama, one in Guatemala and one in Malabo, the brand&rsquo;s first location in Africa. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. You only have to look at my credit card bill to see what a big industry kids' sports is — I've got two kids obsessed with them. Now that I'm married, have kids, lead Cub Scouts, coach sports teams, and everything else, I just don't have as much time as I used to. I’ve heard some horror stories about other franchises, and every time I say to myself, “That hasn’t been my experience at all.”&nbsp;1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. Both were ready for a new challenge — Grigsby after a long career in consulting and the military, and Jones after years in telecommunications and international business. I was a consultant with one of the large privately owned consulting firms in the Washington, D.C., area and throughout the country. I did general consulting, but my primary focus was on national security, physical security and personnel security. I worked there for 24 years.Back in June 2025, because of everything going on with the economy and the administration, my firm had to cut $5 billion worth of contracts. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs. I wanted to make this my future as well, so I decided to go into the franchise business with Fresh Coat Painters.Grigsby:&nbsp;We looked at several franchises before selecting Fresh Coat. It took us about two or three months to decide. We wanted to be careful and make sure we chose the right fit.
