How Scott Thompson Helped Franchisee Candidate Forrest Walden Find the Right Fit With Project LeanNation

With a personalized, clarity-first approach, the founder of Your Future Franchise guided an aspiring owner through the selection process, culminating in a placement with Project LeanNation.

Forrest Walden is not a typical franchise candidate. He’s spent nearly 30 years in the fitness industry, building a career that began with natural bodybuilding before evolving into massive scale. After growing a Fitness Together territory to 55 locations and founding his own brand, Iron Tribe Fitness, Walden found himself at a crossroads. He had recently sold his company and was looking for what he called “chapter three” of his career. Despite his deep expertise, the sheer volume of opportunities in the market felt like a barrier rather than a benefit.

Walden knew he wanted to stay in the world of health and wellness, but he was wary of the burnout that comes with starting from scratch. So, he reached out to Scott Thompson. Thompson, a longtime colleague and the founder of Your Future Franchise, helped Walden refine and navigate the search more effectively. Walden felt that Thompson offered a level of perspective that most brokers lacked because Thompson had actually operated businesses at every level of the industry.

"I really wanted to find a brand that I could believe in, align with and just execute a playbook instead of spending my time creating a playbook,” Walden said. “There’s just so much out there. You can get paralyzed."

A Personalized Approach to the Search

The process began with a deep dive into Walden's personal goals. As he and his wife got closer to becoming empty nesters, Walden was thinking differently about what he wanted from his next business. Thompson started the process with a two-hour onboarding call focused on those priorities, covering everything from the couple’s balance sheet to the day-to-day responsibilities they would actually enjoy. Even though Walden was an expert, he committed to following Thompson’s full discovery process without skipping steps.

Thompson intentionally challenged Walden by presenting a wide variety of industries, including some that were highly profitable but lacked a fitness connection. It was a deliberate move. It was meant to ensure that Walden chose a brand based on a genuine mission rather than just habit.

"He really pushed me to, like, okay, let's take your fitness classes off and let's really look at any brand that could fit you,” Walden said. “Because riches are in the niches and the unsexy businesses are hot. And so he did put a lot of those in front of me.”

Finding Purpose in a New Model

While Walden looked into businesses like parking lot striping, he realized he needed a deeper sense of purpose to stay motivated. He eventually narrowed his focus back to the fitness space, specifically looking for a model that offered high returns with a manageable operational load. Thompson introduced him to Project LeanNation, a brand centered on personalized meal planning and nutritional coaching.

The model stood out for its centralized kitchen system. That meant Walden could provide nutritional support to his community without the headaches of running a traditional restaurant or a full-scale gym. It felt like a natural evolution of the work he’d already been doing for three decades.

"Project LeanNation was the one that just kept rising to the occasion. They're really focused on the sport beyond the meal,” Walden said. “As good as the meals are, the secret sauce is the coaching: putting people on the in-body and helping them understand the difference between fat loss and muscle loss and all the things that I've been preaching for 30 years.”

Navigating the Final Steps

Even after Walden identified the brand, Thompson remained involved in the technical side of the deal. He coached Walden through the Franchise Disclosure Document and helped him prepare for a confirmation day at the corporate headquarters in Rochester. This support helped Walden secure a three-unit deal and find a primary location just blocks away from his home in Birmingham.

Reflecting on the partnership, Walden emphasized that Thompson’s history as an operator made all the difference. He felt that having a guide who understood the long-term commitment required of a 10-year franchise agreement was essential for making the right choice.

"He's been a franchisee. He's worked for the franchisor. He's been part of private equity deals. He understands the game,” Walden said. “So, he's able to offer a wealth of knowledge for anyone considering moving into franchising.”
