A Partnership for the Ages: McDonald's and AARP Team Up to Provide Employment Opportunities for Older Individuals

The fast-food giant is utilizing a new recruitment tactic, hoping to hire more workers for breakfast and lunch shifts.

McDonald’s announced Wednesday that the company is partnering with AARP to tap into a new employee demographic. As a means to attract workers capable of working breakfast and lunch shifts, McDonald’s has posted positions with AARP’s website.

The partnership works through AARP matching particular candidates through its Senior Community Service Employment Program, aiding low-income, unemployed individuals above the age of 55 find work and through Back to Work 50+ program, helping experienced, older job seekers land a position.

While younger demographics have typically gravitated to McDonald’s as an accessible and flexible job, it is a sect of people who often cannot work mornings and early afternoons due to school or other commitments.

CNN Business stated, “With the labor market so tight, fast food chains have been getting creative in their attempts to attract workers. Earlier this month, Taco Bell announced that it would host nearly 600 "hiring parties" with free food, swag and Instagram-friendly photo props to help fill thousands of open jobs.”

McDonald’s, like its fast-food competitors, is interested in higher older workers both for their experience and as a boost to the company’s diversity, according to McDonald’s U.S. Chief People Officer, Melissa Kersey.

The company seeks to fill 250,000 jobs and has planned the partnership rollout for summer 2019.
