Are Employers Required To Pay Employees for Orientation?

Employees must be paid for work or training, but not for time spent completing onboarding materials.

In this week's video, I answer a question I was recently asked about paying employees for onboarding and pre-employment orientation.

The question: Are we legally allowed to send electronic onboarding documents to employees before their first day so they can fill them out at home, or do they need to fill those out at the restaurant while on the clock?

The answer: As long as new employees are not performing any work or training, there is no need to pay them for electronic onboarding. However, if they are required to do any work or training, for example learning a new skill, then you are required to pay them.
