Many across franchising look up to Aziz Hashim as a leader and ambassador for the $1.5 trillion franchise industry. He has been involved in the business of franchising in one form or another since the age of 14. Today, he serves as chairman of the International Franchise Association (IFA) and is the managing partner of NRD Capital, the first private equity fund sponsored and managed by a multi-unit franchisee.

Hashim recently sat down with CNBC to discuss his passion for franchising, his growth in the industry and his goal of “paying it forward.”

From an early age, Hashim knew the restaurant franchise industry was his home.

"I love the pace of the quick-service food business but realized if I opened 'Aziz Fried Chicken' that would have been a very risky proposition. Having the backing of a big-name brand makes a big difference for a start-up," Hashim told CNBC.

From humble beginnings that started with one Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in downtown Atlanta, Hashim built an 80-unit franchise network composed of 18 brands.

A few years ago, Hashim decided to pivot and launch NRD Capital to help multi-unit franchise owners invest in franchise brands and public companies. To date, the fund has purchased brands such as Frisch’s Restaurants and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.

Continuing his mission to enhance the franchise space and help others get into business, Hashim offers this advice to other entrepreneurs. "First, know where your passion lies, make sure you have a dream team of advisors you trust, and have a detailed plan to manage risks," said Hashim.
