Franchising stood out as the ideal path, as it offered them a proven model for success while allowing them to be their own bosses. Varga sat down with 1851 Franchise to discuss his and Young’s journey into franchising, their affinity for the Big Frog brand, and their plans for the future.1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Zoltan Varga: I was born and raised in Europe, and later I moved to New York, where I spent about seven years before meeting Yonie. She dragged me out to the West Coast, where I finished my university degree in Stockton, California, in sports management and business administration. There, I got a corporate job at a health club, where I worked in building maintenance across 65 locations throughout the state. I later became a retail manager and eventually the director of procurement for the company.After many years of leadership changes, mergers and acquisitions, I was laid off. I couldn’t blame them for choosing someone with more seniority, but it made me reflect on what I wanted to do next. I realized I wanted more control over my career, and that’s when I began exploring the idea of opening my own business. I was approached by The Entrepreneur’s Source, and after a few weeks of discussions, we started looking at different franchise options. Big Frog stood out to me, and that’s how I started.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Varga: Before I became a franchisee, I always thought franchising required a minimum of a million dollars to get started. I pictured companies like McDonald’s and thought you needed a huge amount of capital. Yonie and I had talked about opening a business before, maybe a car wash or laundromat, but never in the context of franchising because we assumed it was beyond our financial reach.&nbsp;Now that I’m in it, I want people to know that franchising offers different investment levels, and you don’t need as much capital as you might think. It’s accessible, but you need to be prepared to manage various aspects of business ownership. Yonie will also be involved, in a supporting role, even as she continues to operate her&nbsp;<a href="https://www.persimmoncommunityacupuncture.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=big-frog-zoltan-varga-2727413" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Persimmon Health Community Acupuncture Clinic</a>, which she has owned and run for the past 18 years.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Varga: I was drawn to Big Frog because of its fun branding — the name, logo, and overall trade dress really stood out to me. It’s fun, and people are drawn to that. In my previous job, I was in a role where I was always dealing with problems — maintenance issues, things breaking — and no one ever thanked me when things were running smoothly. I was ready for something different — something fun — and Big Frog fits that.&nbsp;1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?Varga: I want to build and grow this Big Frog location in Stockton to be in the top 25% of franchisees in the system by the end of year three. I also hope to scale the business and maybe open a second location, but right now my focus is on building this first store and making it successful.&nbsp;1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?Varga: One thing I’d like people to know is that I’m really passionate about dogs. Our family has always had dogs, and even though we don’t have one right now, my kids are always begging for another. I love dogs and believe they can teach us a lot. I think one day we’ll have a dog again, maybe even more than one. I also coach our kids’ competitive soccer team in our community.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Varga: My advice is to be realistic about your skill set and expectations. Franchise ownership requires knowledge in multiple areas, so you need to be prepared to learn and grow. You can’t just be good at one thing and expect to succeed quickly. It’s a learning process, and you need to give yourself time to understand every aspect of running the business.The couple will open their Big Frog franchise in their community of Stockton, California. The boutique will be located at 2218 Pacific Avenue and they plan to open in November of 2024.
