One of the locations purchased had been open for 25 years but was failing, and the other was barely holding on. “I bought both of them because I wanted the challenge and I turned them around,” Cox said. “Then I just kept doing it. I kept buying smaller businesses, and I also helped consult.”Cox gained experience working with struggling businesses and bringing them back to life, among them Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. With his accounting background, he was drawn to the financial side of ownership, often helping fellow business owners understand their profit and loss statements and how to manage them.<h3>Breaking Free From Brick-and-Mortar Constraints</h3>Despite his success, Cox grew weary of the daily grind of brick-and-mortar businesses. "I got tired of the landlords, the leases, and a lot of the employees,” he said.&nbsp;About a year and a half ago, Cox sold off his stores and shifted his focus toward consulting and franchise development. That transition opened the door for a new kind of venture — one that aligned with his skills while providing the lifestyle flexibility he wanted.Post-pandemic, Cox noticed that more and more of his clients were reluctant to return to long commutes after years of remote work. “A lot of my clients would not look at something if it had to be brick-and-mortar,” Cox said. “They’re only looking for home-based businesses."Bookkeeping was already something Cox was doing informally for clients. “At least once or twice a month, people were asking me who does my bookkeeping,” Cox said. “I’d normally say, ‘Well, I do it,’ and I’d fix everything for them and move on.
