Smoothie King plans to expand in the Greater Boston by opening up to 53 locations in the next six years. The franchise currently has one location at 314 Newbury St., but the brand’s leadership would like to expand further in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, Waltham, Newton and Brighton.

“We are starting to aggressively pursue the Boston market,” Chad Tramuta, franchise development manager, told the Boston Business Journal.

Smoothie King could open between 45 and 53 locations over the course of the next five to six years, according to Tramuta. A traditional franchise location typically requires between 800 square feet to 1,200 square feet, though a store can reach up to 1,600 square feet of space. The company also pursues “nontraditional” locations on college or university campuses, airports and malls.

The company bills itself as “the premier smoothie bar and nutritional lifestyle center in the industry” and offers smoothies and healthy retail products including sports beverages, energy bars, vitamin supplements and other sports nutrition products.

Initial franchise development costs range from $250,000 to $350,000 for a traditional unit. The average gross sales of traditional units are $414,973 per store, according to Smoothie King.
